Some Stills From my first DVX Outing

Hey guys, I just joined the forum recently and have been an observer for a little bit. Well I just recently (about half a week ago) purchased a DVX100 (not A or B) and have been loving it. Every day I tinker with it and learn something new every time. It's been great fun so far, and I've been extremely impressed with it's capabilities, even in my novice state. Anyway, I just had one of my first outings the other day with the camera, went to a local park and shot some random stuff to see how it performed. I thought I could share some stills from the stuff I got. Now this is all under natural light, and also had no computer modification. This is all purely off the camera, so it might not look it's best, but I was excited to see the results turn out better than I expected. Anyway, enough talk, let's get to the stills.

TURTLE.jpg

This turtle was just hanging out on the sidewalk, and didn't seem bothered by my presence at all, so I laid down and got a few close up shots.

STATUE.jpg

Found this statue down the street from the park, it looked pretty cool with the sun behind it, so I shot a bit while messing around with the iris dial.

BIRD.jpg

For this (and it was a very bright, sunny day), I put it down to 1/8th ND (was at 1/64th) to get the slightly washed out, over exposed look. I thought it came out pretty cool in this case, with the sand next to the water blown out and the black bird walking across it.

I dunno if anyone is interested in seeing the videos of this stuff. If you really would like to see them I'm sure I could find time to post them, but for a first effort I figured just some stills would do the trick. If you have any questions about the shots, let me know. Glad to be a part of this forum now, it's been very helpful thus far!

EDIT: Hmm, can't figure out why the bird shot is small. I tried re uploading it, and it's the same res as the other photos, but it keeps uploading that way. Odd.

I like the turtle shot, nice depth of field there. Also the statue is cool, the clouds make a mystical athmosphere around it. Very "movie-like" shot. Nice that you exposed the statue enough so it's not a typical silhouette figure.
My only question is that of white balance, pics seem to be on the blue-ish side, did you adjust the white balance, or...?

The first 3 have very nice compositions, but proffit is right, it looks like you really need to white balance (unless that bluish cast on everything is on purpose).

BTW, congrats on the new camera. :)

Thanks for the still image. it look great
Like what Cmessineo say.
you need to do manual white balance before you shoot.
color is a bit off. something different, not close to nature color
too artifical, it happen to some of my friends as well.

The blue cast is pretty severe so as already mentioned, make sure you white balance properly. Also, watch your exposure. Try not to shoot where there is a huge contrast between light and shadow. The last still is pretty blown out.

In the meantime, I did some quick tweaking just to give you a sense of what can be done in post...even if you mess up when you are shooting. Colors in my version may not be accurate but it's just for the purpose of demonstration:

Thanks for the feedback so far! Alas, I did not white balance beforehand. I was so excited to be out shooting stuff for the first time that it slipped my mind. Which is odd because usually I'm a pretty obsessive white-balancer when I'm shooting for work. Next time...

looks like your WB preset was 3200 ºK ... be careful with the overexposure it is a dead in digital cameras

good luck

The first day I got mine, it really enjoyed being red. Then I messed with some of the manual controls and now it seems to prefer blue :P

Off the top of my head, I can't remember. I'm at work right now, so my camera isn't handy. When I get home I wouldn't mind posting them up for you at all. Check back here later tonight or tomorrow.

Ok, let me try to recall as best I can.

All shot in 24pA and using these settings:

A. iris Level: 0
Cine-Gamma
Cine-Matrix
V Detail: Thin
Skin Tone: On

Now for what changed between shots...

Bird:
1/8 ND
