F5: Some questions on sony f5

Is this a baby Alexa? How hard would it be to pull an Alexa image out of it? All I want is an Alexa look at 2k. Can it give full DR without using slog?

What are the focus and exposure tools on it? I've tried to research, but I can't find much. Does it have histograms or waveforms? Does it have zebras, peeking, zoom magnification or anything else?

I would probably just use a smallhd 7 inch monitor on it. Would it function without a viewfinder? Will I still have full functionality of the menus and views on the screen?

i noticed the nice shoulder grip is $1800. Seems a little overpriced. If I had the f5, olivine battery, and lets say a 10 lbs lens, do you think is something I could just throw on my shoulder and go?

Thanks for any info.

No one knows just yet about being baby Alexa but if people call the F3 with slog 90% of Alexa, then I think with 16-bit linear raw and 14 stops DR the F5/F55 has a good chance. With that much extra information in your bright tones (16 times more than REDCODE) just like with RED I suspect you would be able to pull them down nicely and get smooth looking highlights that roll-off gently and smooth.

I heard waveform is a strong possibility, probably no histogram. Hopefully it has a spot meter at the very least and zebras should be standard. Sony says they are listening this time around and said through firmware updates they are planning to release a lot of extra features which have not even been announced yet. Peaking yes, magnification - hopefully, sorry I don't know.

The smallHD 7 or 7.7" OLED is exactly what I'm looking at as a good match. The F5/F55 will function without a VF, which is how I'd probably be using it 85% of the time. I might add an alphatron EVF for those rare occassions where I need an EVF. That's my plan.

You will need some rail/support system, there is not much to really hold onto on the body.

I have shot with the F55 (see other threads here) and have seen the 1.0 firmware release on both F5 and F55. In 1.0, there is no wfm, no histogram and no spot meter. Only exposure aids are zebras. Of course, there is peaking and magnification through the VF.

You have options beside the Sony baseplate-- Element Technica Micron rig, Shape 7000 and a soon-to-ship entire package from Solid Camera (Carlos from Solid Camera writes frequently on this board).

+1 on what Dennis told you about VF's, external monitors and baseplate/rods so no need to repeat that.

I love the look of F55+Raw, and this was from a pre-release camera. I think you really need to shoot one yourself to assess if it is "Alexa-like" to your eye. It is subjective, and what looks great to me might not to you.

As far as other questions, 2K will not be available for a while. And your greatest dynamic range will either be SLog2 or Raw.

Nice package from Tilta. And I dare say more will come. So there will be lots of choices beyond the Sony shoulder mount and plate which, by the way, doesn't look bad at all. Saw it at the BandPro event last week.

A light weight support with iris rods and shoulder pad can be had from Movcam for under $650. Full cage system is also available. Without a shoulder pad and iris rods, holding the camera on your shoulder would likely be tough.

Yes. I remember seeing the Movcam support as well and it looked quite sturdy. Very comfortable on the shoulder as well.

Do not buy Movcam stuff. They try to hide it but its all Chinese made. Do all of us a favor and dont support China anymore than we do.

I have all the 3ality technica stuff (micron/shim plate, shoulder pad, top plate, handle, etc) sitting infront of me, waiting for my camera. Looks great, build quality is awesome, what you would expect.

While they are our competitor, I have lots of respect for the quality of what they do. The designs and the build is great. I am very sensitive to cheap "look cool" gear from out of town. I am all about providing function with some flair.

Support the companies that are made up of real filmmakers. I have thousands and thousands of call sheets that inspired our designs.
