Some Q's regarding black magic design shuttle 2 with AF100 ( and a few more )

hi guys i have a few questions,
I have a af102 and to this day i have only been using the avchd internal recording. Recently i have been longing a better codec and what is attacting me is the black magic design shuttle 2, not for the uncompressed recording (although that is cool) but for the DNxHD 220x 10 bit 4:2:2 recording. As record times are acceptable with SSD ( to me uncompressed simply is not worth the space requirments yet ) and using the DNxHD about 6 hours on a 512GB SSD i think ? has anyone been using the BMD shuttle 2 with the AF100\101\102... ? what are your thoughts ?? and especially your thought on the DNxHD 220x 10 bit 4:2:2 recording option, does it blow the internal AVCHD recording away ??

my next question is that with the internal recording it gives the the frame rate you select ie: 24p is 23.976p, 25p is 25p, 1080i50 is 25 frames interlaced ect... But when recording via the HDSDI or HDMI is it always going to be either 1080i50 or 1080i60 ?? and must you then reencode to your desired progressive frame rate ?? or you you simply remove 3:2 pulldown in your NLE for 24p or 2:2 pulldown for 25p from the 1080i50 or 1080i60 ??? or can you get a 23.976p/25p file from a HDSDI/HDMI recording ???

thanks for the help guys

Marty.

Hi, i have been using the shuttle for a little while and it works. In af100 menu you can select 24Psf and that gives you progressive 24p signal over hd sdi. Dont foget to pick up special cable so you can connect it to af100 hd sdi.
Im having some problem with dnxhd.mov files in premiere. Cant select maximum bit depth under sequence setting because that give me pink and blue colours in clipped highligts. Think it got something to do with premiere on windows cant read 10bit from dnxhd files. Same in after effects when working in 16 or 32 bit mode. See attached image for problem in high bit depht. Premiere also seem to read 16-235 levels as 0-255 making the video look washed out. Im using premiere 5.5. Avid Media composer and edius might handle the files better

thanks for the quick reply :)
I too will be using premier cs5.5 on win7x64... although this is weird becuase i have used cineform 10bit 4:2:2 files fine in premier ( although they are converted from the internal avchd recording ) but i never got what you are seeing. How much of a quality drop have you found in not being able to select maximum bit depth ?? do they still look ok ?? also how would you compare the DNxHD 10 bit 4:2:2 220 codec to the internal AVCHD ??

Files look good and are much better then internal avchd.
Cineform is avi and dnxhd is quicktime codec and premiere seem to have some trouble with dnxhd.mov files from shuttle2. Dont know if its some trouble with the way shuttle save the video files to dnxhd.mov..

You can save to mxf also to work with avid system. David is right about the 10 bit. What you get is robust 10-bit codec in 422 colour space instead of avchd 8 bit 420. For simpler work avchd is fine but for money making jobs shuttle is better to have.

Yes the af100 is only 8 bit, but surely the shuttle some how makes it so its 10 bit right in 4:2:2? Otherwise what's the point of it :S ?

Ah my mistake then. After all this research I guess I'm still a little confused. So what exactly would be the picture quality benefit of recording 4:2:2 but still only 8 bit? I've got written here that it helps avoid colour banding and can have up to 4 times more colour shades and variation, sound right?
