Some Pix from Apple Event

Can someone say for sure or not,,if this camera will record 16:9 to tape? I would think it would with 16:9 chips.

All I can say is :

Hi Folks-

Wow. What an exciting day. As I mentioned again this camera has completely allayed my fears about P2. If you just buy the camera and don't want P2- you'll be just fine. Any firewire or USB-2 drive that can handle the 100Mbit data rate will work. It does not need to be a Firestore or other DV specific drive. The engineers have reported using it with an Ipod for example. So there's nothing to fear here. If the worst we can complain about is looks- bring it on.

Noah

PS- chips are indeed 16:9 native though 1/3". When you shoot DV you are getting an HD downconvert on the fly to tape. That means the standard DV picture should completely blow away all other prosumer SD cameras- such as oh say the XL2...

Yeah! Exactly what Reservoir said!

""That's only 5 MegaBytes per second. Surely to God the iPod could handle that""

QUOTE=reservoir]Why wouldn't it work for 720P stuff? I thought those datastreams were only going to be about 40mbps? That's only 5 MegaBytes per second. Surely to God the iPod could handle that....even on a 4200 rpm drive. Now full on 1080i at 100mbps.....yeah.....I could see that *might* be a problem!! But 480p, 720p, and maybe even 1080p *should* work just fine.

why the brochure says nothing about 1080p? only 1080i/720p
from the apple presentation's pic. posted by Noah i could see 1080p..

1080p will be written to a 60i stream just like the DVX. It's true progressive, just recorded interlaced.

I can't speak for the brochure, but the camera shoots and records native 1080/24p and 1080/30p. As Shaw said, they are carried within a 1080i stream, exactly like the DVX does it.

Hugh??? You mean they have a progressive frame and interlace it to 60 fields??? That's '*§%$&". Why would anybody do that. Pic it up interlaced from the chip and you'll at least get rid of that scattered picture when filming fast motion.

phillipp,

it works the same way as the varicam and DVX. its a tried and tested way of carrying an fully preserving the original 24 progressive frames through a 60i data stream.. the original frames are pulled back out to a 24p workflow in the NLE without any quality loss or change whatsoever.

Though not a perfect Moore's Law illustration, recall that your shitty Mac or PC can compute 10,000 more calculations per second than the ENIAC and costs between $500 and $2000 compared to the $460k price of the IBM system.

P2 will get cheap - really cheap. Record to your HDD in the meantime. Christ almighty - nobody is ever happy.

..it has to be anamorphic 16:9 for DV. but it will come from a true 16:9 image. it wll just be squeezed to 720x480 for the DV recording. the DV spec doesnt have any provision for naitive 16:9.

..just like the xl2 and the sony Z1U in DV 16:9 mode.. its all anamorphic.

Well, that's a real push forward then... ;-)

But for 60i/p/whatever. If it's only for transport's sakes, then it's no good for TV, hm?

Personally, I don't think the HVX is all that bad looking.

One thing that I haven't heard anyone mention -- has anyone actually viewed any samples from the camera? By now, most of us have seen the specs, but it sure would be great to read feedback from others and/or see example footage of what this camera is capable of to further whet our appetite.

I don't mind the shape. The only thing that bothers me a little bit is the light grey color. It seems to be a black graphite color in the other mockup though. If so, I'd have to say the camera looks quite good (aesthetically - of course it's good technically!)

What would those have to do with reality? It's basically a mockup. So, if there where functional parts in there, you would definitely not be able to find them in a cam selled in autumn.

Philipp, it works perfectly well. Film broadcast in high-def in the US is broadcast as 1080p within a 1080i stream. It's a well-proven system.

The VariCam records progressive only, it has no provision for interlace. The DVCPRO-HD codec has no provision for progressive in 1080 resolution, only interlace. By carrying the progressive within an interlace stream Panasonic has given us 1080/24p and 1080/30p, and they're real, genuine, and can be edited on a 24p timeline frame-accurately.
