Some Pix from Apple Event

haha I'm going to design a terabyte backpack for this thing. Think about that! A series of externals in a backpack that's fed to your cam. Snap.

I hope someone steals my idea and makes it a reality. That's like a 100 hour tape strapped to your back. ahahaha I love it.

Barry... your mission if you choose to accept it....

:-p

I'm reading the brochure now. It says, "IEEE1394/USB2.0 PC Interface". I think that means that a hard drive plugged into the HVX200 sees it as a PC. Meaning that it will record the data stream as long as the specs are up to it. The P2 cards have the advantage of being shockproof and neatly fitting in the camera as well as allowing the continuous looping feature. So yes, they have some advantages, but I think I'd be a happy camper with a 60GB iPOD until P2 cards drop in price.

I spotted that at the back of the camera, the button layout is different with the pic above from camcorderinfo.com, and the one from brochure !

Look at the "VCR P2" switch.

That explains the camera was a mock-up, I guess.

I hope "PC Interface" means that. That would be stupendous. Also, the mention of an iPod is intriguing. They are so tiny, and I'd imagine fitting one on the cam is not impossible. Phenomenal.

I have a feeling it was a previous tapeless version which is why we never saw the other side. This one seems thinner. Just a hunch anyway.

Good guess.

Hi Folks-

Wow. What an exciting day. As I mentioned again this camera has completely allayed my fears about P2. If you just buy the camera and don't want P2- you'll be just fine. Any firewire or USB-2 drive that can handle the 100Mbit data rate will work. It does not need to be a Firestore or other DV specific drive. The engineers have reported using it with an Ipod for example. So there's nothing to fear here. If the worst we can complain about is looks- bring it on.

That's great news.

PS- chips are indeed 16:9 native though 1/3". When you shoot DV you are getting an HD downconvert on the fly to tape. That means the standard DV picture should completely blow away all other prosumer SD cameras- such as oh say the XL2...

Interesting. So, basically the downconverted HD recorded to DV should look as good as HDV? Because that's basically what HDV is, downcoverted HD.

Are you positive? That's amazing! Why buy a p2 card then? I've bought a 300gb extern. for like $230, that's a LOT of time to record. A p2 card only supplies you with what? Like 16 minutes of 720 and 4 of 1024? Is that correct? It's not worth spending 4 times as much for 75x less the amount of space.

This camera is going to give me a heartattack. No more need for re-capturing, now that is awesome.

Ugh, 6 months away and still in debt for my dvx *sigh*

Well, it might no be worth to get P2 now. But it will drop and when it's affordable, P2 is a much better solution. More portable, more stable, silent, practical. When P2 is affordable enough to get loads of them and in bigger sizes, P2 will be the way to go.

What do you mean by HDV being downconverted HD? I might have misunderstood you but HDV is not downconverted HD, it's full HD resolutions, and in fact I think it's raw resolution will be higher than the HVX (Off the CCD's that is, if I remember rightly from one of Barry G's posts). Of course that means nothing about picture quality, just pointing it out.

So, whadda ya think?

HVX200 - $6000
60GB iPod - $450
DVDSP4 upgrade - $200

for $7000 I'm shooting, editing and delivering HD DVD's. That's pretty incredible.

*I don't think I need FCP5 to edit HD, if I do, tack on another $400.

Is my thinking right? 'Cause it seems too good to be true.

Jared

You'll probably need at least a P2 card or a FireStore HDD to record HD footage. Actually you can't record directly to your Ipod but I think you can store the footage. 8gb P2 card will be around 2 000$ and I don't know the price of the FireStore HDD.

Ya the iPod hard drive isn't near fast enough for this...

Voilla !!

I wonder if they will have these at the Apple stores later? Without that grey color shown in the other pictures this camera looks good. Maybe it's just the lighting. But if you really can transfer to a iPod!!! It will record tape at 16:9!!!

I guess my current iMac can handle this camera. Maybe have to upgrade some software for the 16:9.

I still need to confirm which iPod and which shooting mode- 24p HD DVCPRO50, etc. The point is the capability is there and you won't be straight-jacketed into having to buy P2 cards right away if you want to shoot full HD. There will be plenty of solutions. Potentially with the USB 2, Firewire and PCMCIA ports on this camera I can envision a huge 3rd party market analogous to that of the Ipod in terms of accessories. This is destined to become quite the tinkerer's camera.

Why wouldn't it work for 720P stuff? I thought those datastreams were only going to be about 40mbps? That's only 5 MegaBytes per second. Surely to God the iPod could handle that....even on a 4200 rpm drive. Now full on 1080i at 100mbps.....yeah.....I could see that *might* be a problem!! But 480p, 720p, and maybe even 1080p *should* work just fine.
