thanks guys but i still need help with getting the timecode onto the dpx, anyone ?

Well, the Sony F35 camera body doesn't generate time code. Truely, it's a camera, and the SRW-1 deck was it's intended recorder. The Sony SRW-1 provided timecode when docked.

For those of us not using full electronic docking recorders (SRW-1, OB-1, Codex Onboard) it's not possible to send timecode from the camera to a recorder. You can cheat this problem through a timecode generator box, or if you want to be completely thorough, a master black generator and a timecode generator in lockstep, with the timecode sent to the recorder. Of course, this only works directly if the recorder in question has a port to accept timecode. If not, you might further need a multiplexer to multiplex the timecode into your SDI stream.

This kind of sucks! How do you go through post production without timecode? Importing a simple EDL or AAF in Resolve needs timecode. Something with lots and lots of footage without timecode is nightmare. How are people doing? Are you really using a generator? I mean it sends nothing out?

The F35 makes a great image but I get the feeling more and more that to use it you need to make a lot of sacrifices and make do without lots of normal and ordinary features. Hmmm.

Can't the gemini generate it's own timecode? It also has a timecode input if you need it to sync with audio.

I don't think this is really an issue SJX as almost all the recorders we are using have the ability to generate or sync timecode into themselves. The hyper deck is the only one that does't have a timecode input.

I suppose it could be a minor frustration. But the smallest of productions don't really need organized timecode, and in my experience, this problem sorts itself out on larger productions. To be clear - the camera body doesn't generate timecode, but any number of video recording units are capable of either generating or accepting an external timecode input. In my own experience on indie feature film production, synced timecode with the field audio recorder was desired, and the audio mixer provided the camera department with a jam lock box. This was left attached to the SR-R1 video recorder timecode input, and twice a day was jam synced to the audio recorder. This means the recorded video signals had matching timecode to the separately recorded audio. It was then easily matched via reel and timecode in DaVinci Resolve.

Honestly, only the lowest end of recorders don't support timecode input... sure this means an extra 5volt accessory to be powered, but that's not a huge hassle in the grand scheme of things.

to be clear the Gemini does have a timecode in port via the remote tally connection (i think it's a lemo 6 pin). timecode is a huge deal to our offline/online workflow so we're still trying to figure that out.

The recorder is the responsable for TC, not the camera. I think you're seeing problems where there are none. Any recorder will embed a TC, either that being rec run or free run.

haha thanks Barrett. But it will be a huge pain in the ass for longer form projects. We're thinking about feeding timecode in from an iphone just to keep it affordable.

mac the gemini is more than decent for me. the way it was designed is that it expects timecode to be fed into it either sdi from the camera or a master clock.
