Some of my first grabs

During a 5 minute break from filming a show for a local TV netwwork in Austin (DP uses XL1s, doesn't seem too fond of the dvx), i took out my camera and ran to a few trees to play around.
I got the DVX around a week and a half ago, this is some of the first stuff I've captured. no colour correcting done, straight from camera.

DP's an idiot. XL1 has nothing on DVX. Nice shots too. ;)

Re: Some of my first grabs

hehe thanks, well he's had the xl1 for a few years now and i guess he's just used to it, i've taken the dvx to two shoots already, no requests yet, maybe I'll DP, hehe

Re: Some of my first grabs

I know I've said it before, but it's always outstanding to me how nice so many people's 'first' grabs are. Say just as much about the talent of the DVX owners as it does about the DVX itself!

Beautiful stuff - thanks for sharing!

Re: Some of my first grabs

How can anyone claiming to be a pro seriously claim the XL1 is even par let alone better then the DVX  ::)  ::)

The camera came out 7 years ago.

Ya, my Pentium 100 rocks and you can keep your fancy pants P4 3 gig processors!  ;)

Give him a smack  >:(

(Nice pics 8) )

Re: Some of my first grabs

A guy I occasionally work with uses an XL1 and the thing has been a great paperweight. It's always going in for service or just sitting there collecting dust. It's a pile. He's always calling me to see if he can use my DVX. Not a chance.

Re: Some of my first grabs

Yeah, I know a guy who works at an offical repair centre for JVC, Sony, Panasonic and Canon.

Well, they were recently, until they eventually said that they refuse to fix any more XL1 cameras (because sooo many were coming in for servicing) and that after extenstive testing, they refused to stock or service the XL2 - the guy I know said that the management told Canon that they (the company is Visual Impact in west London, if you're interested!) were working with A/V pros, and were prepared to loose money on not selling Canon products, if it meant that their customers were not going to be given shoddy equipment!!!

BTW, they sell the DVX100AE, and he said that they have very few of them in for service!!!

Re: Some of my first grabs

Nice stuff Carlos. I use to live in Austin, years ago. I worked at Channel 13 and then for the FOX affiliate when they bought it. Any chance you were doing work for them?

Stick with the DVX. You and her will do alot of great things together. And Austin is a great town for indie musicians and moviemakers.

I've been making a student TV show called Stufent Filmmaker Showcase which runs on the Austin music network. Nothing fancy, but it's a start

Ansis - I would recommend videactionpro - http://www.videoactionpro.com

The guy who runs the place has a SERIOUS attitude problem and come across like he'd do ANYTHING to get a sale - but you can use this to your advantage and haggle a little with him.

Some say he doesn't stock OFFICIAL UK-spec DVX's, but my friend purchased from him (a dvxuser.com poster called Fidel brought his DVX from there too who was very helpful for me) and nether have had any issues with the DVX's not being "offical".

Anyways, my mate who brought his DVX from there had a problem with it - sent it back - videoactionpro couldn't fix it - sent it to an official licensed Panasonic repair place and they fixed it all free of charge under the warranty.

The DVX comes with 2 years warranty and is only £2,595 (including VAT!)

I haven't seen it cheaper anywhere else!

Re: Some of my first grabs

You're on a shoot and you run to shoot a tree in your free time.  I don't know if that's romantic, cute or silly. LOL  ;D

During my free times I try to inject coffee, go through inventory or sleep.  Maybe hit on the actresses, JK  ;D

Those are nice grabs, I bet you're a hard worker too to be carrying around extra weight when needed and shooting on your own like that.  One thing to do next time is sort of make a documentary about the shoot your working on.  Make a compilations of different people you've worked with and edit it put together funny annecdotes people share or just the craziness on shoots sometimes.  I think the normal civilians out there would get kicks and even be shocked on what goes on in film making...

This is something I always tell myself I should do but when i'm out there with my gaffer kit or a/c equipment and all I think, damn, is that extra case worth carrying around- then I leave my dvx and kick myself in the ass later when our cameraman got reprimanded by a highschool teacher by trying to pick up one of her students in a golf cart or like the time one of the grips used the jib arm to lift a lady's skirt right up.

She could sued for sexual harrasment but she was a good sport.  Hot too  ;).

Re: Some of my first grabs

haha,
well, i've been wanting to do "behind the scenes" stuff, i just find myself having to do things on set that dont allow me to have the dvx in my hand, maybe next time i will though, they'll probably let me

Re: Some of my first grabs

Yes, Ansis - they are authorized and very knowledegable - I believe they sell the AE for just below the £3,000 mark though. And only one years warranty... :(

Re: Some of my first grabs

UPDATE: Ansis - the DVX100AE has had a price drop at videoactionpro: It's now just £2,399 (with VAT!)

Less time to save the pennys!!

Andy
(Inadvertent videoactionpro.com sales rep!)
Sorry - this shouldn't really be on the screen grabs section, should it!!
