Some of my C4D work...

So I wanted to try and make one of those turntable animations and this is the first model I made in C4D. I refined it a bit today but it was fun to revisit the project. I created the artwork for the DVD case in Photoshop then applied it to my C4D DVD case. Also, I wanted to practice a bit with lighting.

Well its been like a million years since I posted anything I've been really busy with my new job.

So I'm working on something very new to me. Character animation - rigging in particular. This is my first attempt at it and its for a client. So I hope things go well. If you can't notice from the screen grab I'm rigging a goldfish.

I feel like I've learned a lot already some xpresso too but sadly I'm sure I've only scratched the surface.

Horror of horrors. Unwrapping UV's, rigging, painting weights and texturing the mess with enough ram to handle it all.

Hey Josh, I liked the last tree shot. I assumed you were working it into a scene so I I kind of put off commenting.

I heard with Cactus Dan's tools in R11 things are easier. I know he's constantly working hard at it.

Post when you can man. Keep in touch and let us know how things are going.

Ya - cool tree man.

Character animation is tough... naturally your first attempts are the hardest.

Reference objects are pretty useful. Also, making use of 2d vectors and HUD sliders helps a bunch. Oh, try the new NLE system as well - you can overlap animations to make them look smoooooth.

I couldn't watch the video - password protected.

Thanks Gord and djembeplay. I will try and post a little more but I'm certainly in the weeds at work. Yeah CA is quite the intense process but I'm enjoying it so far.

The swim cycle is too rigid because there are not enough joints.
The body should bend from sided to side (think Shark) so for that you need at least 3 joints, like a human spine. But you could add more to make it smoother. I would suggest using an IK-Spline tag.
But you could do it with an xpresso rig as well.

It's really hard to see from that picture so if you could post another larger picture with more of a side angle it would help to see things better.

It looks like there is only 1 joint for the tail fins. Again maybe have 1to3 joint(s) to meet the 2 fins then 3 joints for each of the two sub fins using IK-Spline tags on them also.

I can't see where the arm fins (dorsal fins?) are attached.

It might help to watch some videos of fish also. If you have 'Finding Nemo' handy it wouldn't hurt to watch a bit of that, even though it's toon style.

Thanks for the reply Gord. I have a few tweaks to do today then its going to the client. I appreciate your comments!

Hard to see from the pics but I do h ave a 3 joint spine set up and 2 joints for each fin :). All using variations of Cactus Dan's IK.

Ahhh. That's good then. I played around with a fish rig briefly as I'm also trying to come up with a realistic bird wing rig. I have a couple tests but haven't settled on something I'm happy with yet.

But, I found a link for some free fish models while I was looking for something quick to experiment with on the side...

They also have some flowers. 3ds though so it's all triangulated. Just posting it if anyone's interested.

I'm having fun with rigging so far :).

Cactus Dan has a cool video of a wing rig he made here

Also, I believe the C4D content browser has a nice mocca wing rig.

Thanks for the models link.

Hey thanks for the links Josh. The dragon wing was really cool. It doesn't fit with my bird though because the wing structure behaves differently than the dragon but that's a nice rig by Cactus Dan.

I don't have R11 though so I don't have the mocca wing rig but I think I'm closer to my own rig idea. I'll post in my own thread later tonight about it .

Btw, those fish rigs are something else. I can't say I have a good one myself yet.
I'll have to come back to that.

Looking forward to checking out your thread later! Agree about the fish rigs. I'm getting closer but have to stop to work on a few other higher priority projects.

Thanks guys! I feel much more comfortable with character rigging and animation now. For me just having to do it for a client forced me to learn a lot and I really enjoyed it!

I so want to rig and animate a dinosaur now!

Here was a super fast job I did last week. I started it on Saturday and finished it on Sunday. Theirs a lot more I would add to it but time didn't allow. Recently, I find my self doing a lot of modeling at work but that seems to be a good thing as I'm really enjoying the modeling process.

Really good Josh. Glad your enjoying modeling also. I love it myself. And I get you on the 'same day' deal. ;) Those gigs are tough.
