Some Highlights of a Pilot I'm shooting with the HPX 300.

Thank you Jeff,

I appreciate your commet, like I've said before this camera ain't perfect but with a little work you can turnout some decent pictures. Yes sir, polarizer and ND filter on my Redrock Mattebox, only way to go in my humble opinion on the waters down here, super bright other wise.

Great action shots, looks beautiful! And no skew!
Really gorgeous stuff, looks like the ND and polarizer did the job on the water and sky.

But where are the bikini babes???

Bikini babes are on the way Chuck, they missed their flight.

The polarizer and ND were worth every part of the hundred and some dollars a piece for the 4x4 size filters that I paid.

I'm convinced It would have been washed out and looked like crap otherwise. I shot most of the video with the filter wheel set to 4 and then had another ND filter in the matte box and the polarizer as well. The rest of the time I shot it in filter 2.

Virtually no glare, great detail in the clouds and it provided what I believe was about 1-2 more f-stops so that I could open up the lens almost full and not have the video look blown out.

As you know Chuck the south Florida sun is harsh and in mid summer its a monster for just about any video camera, the 300 performed very nicely I would say.

As you noticed little or no skew or jello, its been very well documented and I have read numerous post about it, I just remembered the suggestions Barry and many others posted about the subject and avoided shots that would cause it. It was just that simple, plan your shots and work with the camera to its strengths and avoid its weakness.

And if you are wondering it was shot in 1080P at 24 and AVC Intra 100.
I use that setting and 30P more than any other settings despite the impression that people have about this camera being useless in those modes.

Its amazing what you can do with the right tools.

I know with you and Brian down here I'd have one hell of a crew, I don't if I can afford you guys but I'll try.

lol.....

Thanks, I can't wait to have it done and hopefully sold.

That's good looking stuff. Did you have polarizer on?
jeff

I thought you had .. seeing the clouds off the water was a strong indicator :-)

Most of my filters are 82mm .. I should start investing in 4x4's ..

Did you use the on camera ND?

jeff

Hi Jeff, yes I had a Circular Polarizer and a ND.6 filter in the matte box and then the ND filter on the camera wheel. I switch between position 2=1/4 ND and position 4=1/64 ND.

I'm assuming that the 82mm filters would achieve the same results, I frankly don't know. I do know that this setup was significantly higher than the individual screw on filters but I'm happy with the results.

My buddy Chuck has been on me for a while to breakout the polarizer and I was just simply lazy and didn't really know how to use it. Or even better I asked him what effect it would have other than eliminating glare from a window, headlights etc.. which is why I bough it.

When I asked him what effect it would have on the video if I wasn't trying to shoot through a window or into the water he said something like this.

"Dude, you wear sunglasses all the time, you can't see down here without them, when you have them on you can see the clouds clearly in the sky, depending on the sun's location you get a kinda warm glow and things have richer color etc...
try that without the glasses", I felt like such a dumb ass after that. lol...

I wear polarized glasses all the time down here in Miami, imagine that. Needless to say its one of my favorite filters now. :dankk2:

Hi Carlos,

Now knowing that you was using an external ND.6 and watching more carefully you video, I can see a color shifting in some dark blue tones in the images...

Well let me tell you, I have experience the same. Has you notice that? Let me elaborate:

The guy who wears the darkest blue shirt (who's driving the boat), is also wearing a navy (dark/midnight blue tone) shorts (00:18, right after the Evinrude's), am I correct? You can see his shorts real color tone after you zoom-back, at 00:21.

At 00:37 (with the fishing poles at the foreground) when he throws up a net, his navy shorts are color-shifting... And at 00:41 his shorts looks almost burgundy/violet/purple... whatever color you like but not blue!

Can you confirm that from your raw footage? Has you noticed this color shift?

As said before, I have experienced this mostly with ND.6 and specially with ND.9's... not as obvious with ND.3's and always with external filtering. Never with the internal NDs Filter Wheel in the camera.

I had to overcome this issue with an IR Cut Filter (Infrared/Hot Filter) on a fixed basis in a 3rd filter slot in my Mattebox, in order to eliminate the infrared contamination and maintain the real color spectrum basically in dark fabrics, due to the high density Cmos' on higher end cameras like the HPX300/370.

Please keep us posted about your findings.

My best,

Henry Epstein

Carlos, forget the ND and polarizer. Pack one of these on the next fishing shoot...

Skew? What skew???

Henry I went back and looked at the raw and I don't see it, I've used this filter quit a bit and I've never seen it.

Thou I think it´s pretty boring to watch other guys fishing (but I´m not into fishing anyway, so what do I know), I could sell that kind of stuff here in Europe like crazy.

Do you have more films like that? I get tons of requests for fishing footage.

Frank

What brand of Pola were you using? I've noticed the color shift toward magenta on inexpensive polarizers and not so much on NDs.

Last night I found these articles at ProVideo Coalition, written by Art Adams, which may be a good read... Enlightens IR problems.

Art Adams writes about this subject and how to overcome it with the correct IR filters on the market.

I have found these IR problems in both my old HPX300 and new HPX370, since we do also have harsh sun here in Ecuador and almost along the year.
