Some hardware questions for ya.

#1) I am in the market for a 16:9 lens (I read the other posts) What other makes of lenses are out there and what is the BEST one for the DVX ? (zoom range, quality, construction and so on)

#2) As I recall with a 16:9 lens it is rather hard to focus on the little dvx lcd. I am looking into a high res monitor. However I am not sure what path to take. I have a rather tight budget for this project as it is coming out my own pocket. So I am looking into a 13" monitor with 500 - 600+ lines of resolution.

What Brand / make would you suggest. Also whats the cost ?

Re: Some hardware questions for ya.

I just got off the phone from the guys down at vistek and they suggested instead of buying a high priced monitor I could purchase a 13" TV with the needed inputs. What you see is what you get "where his words" That would save me a TON of cash, my question is simple. These high priced monitors will be receiving the same 4:3 feed from the camera anyways so they would in turn display the same squished image ? However correct me if I am wrong but is there a monitor out there that will take that feed and expand it to the 16:9 ? so what is on the TV is the full image ?

Or am I living in a pipe dream ?

Re: Some hardware questions for ya.

You could certainly get a TV. It wouldn't be a monitor, it would be a TV, but it would be better than nothing. There was an extensive discussion here a couple weeks ago about a Toshiba flat-screen TV, 13" or 14", which also had 16:9 mode, and went for something like $169 at Best Buy.

Re: Some hardware questions for ya.

Yes. Great TV. I believe in the other thread we posted the results of our (informal, but based on a resolution chart) resolution tests, and it came off very, very well.

Re: Some hardware questions for ya.

So am I correct in assuming that the 16:9 mode will take the squished 4:3 image and stretch it to 16:9 full screen (with black bars of course) ? So I can see the full image ?

If so I am sold and I will run next door now and buy one :)

Re: Some hardware questions for ya.

Well, it actually takes the stretched image (4:3) and squishes it to 16:9, but the answer is yes -- if it's anamorphic footage, it will display properly in 16:9 mode on the TV.

Re: Some hardware questions for ya.

That Toshiba model (14AF43) isn't made anymore. It's gone from just about everyplace I've tried here in the L.A. area.
I'm told it's being replaced by the 14AF44 "sometime in May".
Hopefully it will still have the same features.

David,
Which Best Buy in the Los Angeles area has these...I'd love to grab one?
Thanks,
Ken
