Some DVX Shorts...

Dude! Wow! All of those short films were great! Haha, they sure got me surprised and didn't know what the end would be like. Especially Batman and The Seagull. How did you do the Batman getting run over and the Seagull flying. I've got my ways to do it, but I'm just curious how you did yours. I would use a greenscreen for the Seagull and for the Batman, I would just get like three still frames of Batman on the road, keyframe it out, and then use that to make it look like he's getting run over.

Also, for the Dad Family, did you use one DVX or more than one? How did you set up the shots in that? Did you record the entire thing with one angle and then do it again with another angle and then keep doing it like that and just edit in post? Let me know! Great job!

With Batman I filmed the background and then filmed each subjects separately. Then I spliced them all together in after effects with masks and created the blood with an animated mask over a red solid box. I animated batman's gun with Flash. No green screens were used.

Seagull was done in a similar way. It was the first time I attempted compositing video on video so it looks a little rougher. It looks very stiff, but ultimately, the effect is funny looking so I never went back and changed it. The goal is to make people laugh, and sometimes the rougher it looks, the funnier it is.

The Dad Family was shot with one camera. We blocked everything and then performed it over and over as I went around the room and filmed each character.

(by the way, I'm the guy in the hat in Batman)

AfterFX and Final Cut

AfterFX and Final Cut

I used Final Cut for capturing and editing.
After FX for color correction and effects.

I really want to learn Shake right now but the task of constantly learning new programs and staying up to date is always daunting.

Yeah I'm trying to figure out how to use the special effects programs I have myself. Know of any good tuts online? Or did you take classes to learn how to do what you did?

Wasn't that Batman movie similar to a little flash movie made about Batman? With the same kinda twist?

O_o; I could be wrong.

Still funny, though.

I don't know. I'm sure there's another "superhero gets hit by a car" film somewhere out there. If so I haven't seen it. I just make stuff that makes me laugh. If it makes me laugh and I haven't personally seen it, I go for it.

As for after effects, I didn't take classess. I just skimmed through a few books and started messing around. I bothered a lot of friends and asked a lot of questions. I knew how to use Photoshop so I went into AfterFX thinking of it as Photoshop for video.

The programs that scare me the most are the ones I can't relate to other programs (like AE with Photoshop). When DVD Studio Pro came out, I hated it because it was so alien to me. Things didn't make sense. Then, after learning the dang thing Apple completely changed the interface and I had to start all over again. Shake is intimidating to me because my knowledge of AfterFX doesn't seem to translate as much as I was hoping.
