Hey all...

The studio I work with down in Miami shoots the DVX and P+S telecine with 35mm still camera lenses almost exclusivley for everything from commercialla to music videos and feature films. (Including a music video for Ice-T shot wiht that rig)

Anyway they finally got up a site with some samples of their music videos. All of them shot on the DVX/P+S and color corrected with Final Cut. Check out the site at...

www.rhinostudios.com On the home page you can click on the stills below for samples of the vids. They are all altin music videos but hey.... it's Miami ;D

mini 35 craze ... almost as bad as the dolly craze, thanks to Hudson (that damn crazay cracker )

Re: Some DVX/Mini35 stuff...

Damn...their camera is the smallest part of their camera. If you get what I mean. I'd like to see a better pic of it. That DVX must be the envy of all DVX's.

Quick question...
How are you guys doing your 16:9 stuff, are you using the DVX squeeze, cropping 4:3 in post or the DVX non-squeeze crop while shooting?

Re: Some DVX/Mini35 stuff...

to anyone who is wanting that picture of the DVX camera Big, just right click the image then click zoom in, then right click again and zoom in AGAIN. and after two levels of flash zooming, there it is....In all its glory....I would paste up a version but I dont want to be stealing any images.

Take it easy,

I'm shocked that someone spends that kind of money on a rig like that. It really reminds me of putting $100,000 into a Honda Civic. But whatever works, works. If the client is happy and you're making a profit there's nothing wrong with that.

You have a point, but it's a "consider every angle" situation.

The owner of the studio owned another studio several years back, BIG post house (He had 6 macs running Avid Symphony and 3 Davinci's) Then 9/11 happened, and rather then lay people off he kept them on the payroll hoping business would pick up soon, it did'nt.

He has started almost from scratch, and was'nt looking to sink alot of money, he owned 2 digi beta but the DVX simply blew those away and with P+S adapter he got the "film look" he desired without the money (I believe the adapter was $7,000 when he got it, and they got a package of 6 Nikon still 35mm lenses for under $1,000. That might sound like alot, but being a production house imagine how much a compariable rig would have cost for HD, 35mm or even super 16)

It took about two music videos for word to get out, and now he has to literally turn down work. He directed a music video for Ice-T witht hat rig, has shot three features (The one he wrote and directed cost about $8,000 to make (No that doesnt include the equipment costs, but he owns the stuff and they are payed for by music vids, ect) sold the world rights at AFM and the distributor said, "A month ago if you had asked me I would say there is no way to shoot a good looking movie for under $1,000,000 You just proved me wrong."

In addition his work has gotten the company hired on as the production house for a film staring DMX and another starring Giovani Ribisi, Brad Renfro.

It is sort of like when Sandy Collara made the fan film "Batman: Dead End" He sold his car and dropped over $30,000 into a short he could never sell, but it got him tons of exposure, and many sit downs with studios. Last I heard he was looking to do a "Creature from the Black Lagoon" remake.

So in hindsight, was the extra cash worth it? You tell me.
