F55: Some disappointing news about 4K internal/external recording options.

I wouldn't expect anything less from Sony, at this point.

I'm looking forward to seeing what other camera manufacturers bring to the tablet in the coming year. RED is looking like a strong contender.

outch. I probably would not rely at 100% on a HDMI cable for recording.
6:45 "You even can't use an external monitor while recording"
It's ridiculous what Sony does if you consider how expensive it is.

The FS5 seems best suited for 1080p.

I'll take 10-bit 4:2:2 HD over 8-bit 4:2:0 4K most any day. So far few of my clients want 4K, so considering adding an FS5 for some of my travels, but won't be selling the FS7.

Yes, the eventual raw output feature may solve this problem when using with the Odyssey 7q+, just like it currently does with the FS700.

nope it won't for two reasons:

So far it appears Sony is not using the same implementation of 12-bit RAW on the FS5/FS7 as they did on the FS700. Not only that, but the FS700 was a 11-12 stop camera whereas the FS5/FS7 are 14 so 12-bit linear RAW really doesn't cut it.

In the Vocas fs5 video and on another forum (not sure if its cool to link another forum here) Alister Chapman says its going to be corrected with the first firmware fix

Well said, LOL. What an embarrassing omission, who would be content with a "professional" camera where you can't monitor the image aside from the EVF? So, so poorly thought out. The camera has a few new tricks that the FS7 doesn't have, but they've really lost sight of the purpose here, haven't they? I would call the lack of such an important capability an utter disaster. I'm sure the project manager will hear this to no end... just how could this get through all tiers of development like this?

The FS7 really is a best-bang-for-the-buck, above and beyond worth $2400 more than the FS5. Now if only Sony would recognize the winning horse, here, and show the FS7 some more TLC.

Fantastic thread, Dennis, thanks for contributing here. I'm unworthy to post in that thread for my ignorance, but great reading, and a couple great links to more great reading.

This is giving me flashbacks to the 5DmkII and the 7D. LCD shutoff when connecting a monitor! Talk about a step backwards.

Yes it does seem that there is a contradiction there, from two respectable sources. I'm concerned certainly, but for me it's still the only option for a purchase of a new camera.

I am still glad I ordered the camera (I really need small, its not that often I would run around with a big recorder hanging of it) so its not a deal breaker just the difference between absolutely thrilled and happy :) sounds like you will still be able to record internal and external but without the onboard LCD or EVF (annoying but workable)

I have a pre-order and I will be purchasing. For me 95% of the time I'll be sole operator for my bread and butter stuff and internal 4k and on board monitoring will be fine. But I have a colleague who I work with with an F55 and for some projects I'd see how the FS5 would be good for a B cam, providing it can be monitored and recorded onboard and with an external HDMI out for a director monitor. It does seem like a major oversight if this will never be possible.

So although the 5% of time I'll need the function I'll be in trouble, I can't turn down the camera solely based on that as it does fill most of my criteria.

FS7 just isn't an option. People state that 'it's not that much of a jump up to the FS7 in cost'. That's only partly true, when you factor in the more expensive lens and XQD cards, grip etc, the difference is more like £2000, which for me personally, is untenable.

It is a bit disappointing to hear about this limitation. None the less if you are recording to an O7Q+, you would probably use that as a monitor anyway, and you can loop out of there to another monitor as well.

If you are R&G UHD then the internal is probably OK, and like Sony states this camera is all about grab and shoot. That is how they market it.

We will probably get clarity in a while if this is a permanent limitation or one that goes away in 3 months or 12.

The reason I ordered this cam is for its size and weight as well as the cheaper media.

I just did a test shoot of XAVC-I verses XAVC-L at 50mb HD in my FS7 and other than some stuttering in FCPX playing back with a LUT and some CC while displaying WF and VS I see no difference in the quality. And it is much cheaper to archive SD cards or just less disc space. It is great to just hand off SD cards when you are done with a shoot. And if you shot to both at once you can still keep a copy.

And frankly 90% of my shooting is still HD. So I still feel very positive about the FS5 I have on order. I will probably keep my FS7 s well, the FS5 was not meant to replace it. But who knows maybe if the FS5 turns out to be as useful to me as a FS7, I may sell my 7.

We live in interesting times, everything in life seems to be a compromise.

This camera is such a nonsense.

EDIT: Oh, it's going to be fixed in a forthcoming firmware update?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

Let me know how the FS5 firmware roadmap pans out.

+1

Don't buy a camera hoping that some bugs or features will be fixed or added later on. Especially Sony!!

I WILL REPEAT: DON'T DO IT!!!! IT'S A TRAP!!!!!!

Mentioning no names, but I remember 'trusted' Sony sources claim v2 firmware would fix the LUT/WFM nonsense on the FS7 and the same source claiming the F5 couldn't do 4k internal due to hardware constraints.

Take all insider Sony claims with a pinch of salt.

I'm sure you're right about stops and DR, I was referring to the ability to record/view internally and externally in 4k simultaneously if outputting via the raw to the Odyssey (once this feature becomes available), merely a guess on my part though.
