Some black and white test grabs

Here are some test color treatments (or lack of color treatements) that I did to some footage that we shot for a documentary on the Korean comfort women. I was going for a Pi sort of look. The treatment will likely not be seen in the film, and if it does, only during a 15 second blurb at the very beginning that forshadows what is to come. Reallly, this is just me playing with some effects in FCP and seeing what I can get with the DVX. Let me know what you think.

i like the exposure and the images look great to me. but the grain kilsd the image a little . id imagine the grain/noise is induced from one of the post filters.. ? is the blowout also induced in post?.. if not its still asthetically nice imagery.

that is a sick look, that'd be great for this detective film we should doing this summer. do you think you could share what you did in camera and in fcp to make it look like that?

That looks great! It also has a mid-century documentary look to it. Can't wait to see how it applies to the footage from Washington!

Wow. Those seriously look cool. That look is ideal for some future projects I'm going to be working on. What did you do?

Hey, thanks for the compliments everyone.

iamloser: The grain is something that I don't mind so much. I actually like it. It gives it even more of a real black and white film feel. Like black and white film that has been slightly overexposed and then push processed a couple of stops. But you are right, the grainy look is just noise from the filter. So I probably couldn't get rid of it even if I wanted to. Unless you know of a way . . .?

ecking: It's really not that hard of an effect to get. Just use the 3-way Color Corrector in FCP, bring your saturation down to 0, and play with the black, mid., and highlight sliders. I first bring my blacks down to where I want them, then adjust highlights. Then I use the mid. slider (usually have to bring it pretty far up if your blacks are low) to adjust it further. Just play with it. It also helps if you're using an image that is already overexposed in places. Oh yeah, and for this shoot I was filming in 24PA, squeeze mode--no other special settings.

Jerry: I'm glad you like the treatment. Chances are for the film it will only appear during a short blurb when Kang grandmother is saying how she was almost dead--still keeping everything a mystery to the audience, yet forshadowing things that happen later in the film. But who knows, it may show up in some other places as well. We got your footage in the mail yesterday, and it looks great! It is great to have footage of her protesting in the U.S., with English signs and everything. The images were superb, and I especially liked some of the over-the-shoulder shots you did. You also had a nice tracking shot that brought her nicely into the screen. There's a lot of usable stuff. Thanks for your help! Anthony and I appreciate it!
