Some basic questions about the Panasonic GH1...

Hi, I'm new to the forum and just have some questions about this camera. I am thinking of purchasing the Panasonic GH1 for basically HD video and don't mind about the still image quality.

I wanted to ask if the AVCHD codec is simple to use and edit in Final Cut Pro. I will be shooting mostly in 24p and transcoding it into ProRes for edit. When doing the pulldown to get rid of the interlace, is it time consuming?

Also, from most of the vimeo videos that I have seen, there is stuttering in all of the videos. Is this caused by Vimeo itself and not the camera?

Lastly, I am planning to record audio on separate audio recorder (Zoom H4n). Will it be difficult to sync with the GH1's 24p?

Thank you for reading and posting. Need all the help I can get.

There is a sticky thread regarding workflow and pulldown removal that should answer your questions about pulldown.

I think you may need to clarify what you mean by "stuttering," but I am aware of no issues with the GH1 that I would call "stuttering," so it is likely an artifact of how well Vimeo plays on your computer.

There are threads on this too here on this board. The H4N seems to be good about syncing, but if you have very long clips, you may have to very slightly adjust the playback speed of the audio from the GH1 (usually it's something like 99.9%) in order for it to properly sync, as the H4N is not a timecode device, however, syncing seems to be relatively easy to accomplish, especially if you stick to relatively short clips...it's when you get into a single file that's half an hour to an hour long or so where this "drift" seems to be most prevalent.

Good luck and make sure to show us your clips if you decide to grab this camera!

Is the AVCHD codec simple to use in Final Cut Pro? No.
Is pulldown removal time consuming? Yes.
Is it difficult to sync separate audio to the GH1 video clips? No. Time-consuming and tedious, but not difficult.

And the stuttering you see on Vimeo is not a fault of the camera. It's usually caused by a slow internet connection.
