Some answers to responses...

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses to the post. I really appreciate it.

I don’t really worry about the short recording times. I shot ‘Dark Days’ on film, so it really isn’t that much of a stretch. One magazine of 16mm film is only ten minutes long too. Although the cards seem expensive to buy up front, if you’re shooting a feature length movie or documentary, P2 is so much cheaper. There is no question about it. As an example, a can of 16mm film is approximately $60.00 to buy, developing that roll is about $60 and then transferring it to tape is about $60. This is a very rough price and I may be off a little, but not much. That’s $180 for ten minutes of shooting. Just over $1000.00 an hour! You just can’t afford to let the camera roll and roll! The way I work with P2 is identical to the way I would work if I were shooting film. The fact that I’m making a documentary and not a feature film doesn’t mean that I now have license to just shoot and shoot and shoot all day, everyday. I’m with these guys for two years. I was with the guys in the tunnel for two years also. If I just let it roll, I’d end up with 1000’s of hours of footage and a nightmare in the editing room! You have to pick and choose what you want to shoot. You have to pick and choose what you want to shoot. Now don’t get me wrong here, I can’t wait for the 8 and 16 gig cards to start rolling in. I’ll be the first in line!!! But it shouldn’t stop the show. I tend to have a very specific idea of what I want to film each day and then just go for that. In writing all of this… this is just the way I personally work. It doesn’t mean it’s the best or the only way to do it. So for right now, I am only working off cards. (I could definitely use more) I fill all the cards I have and then whenever we get a break, I empty them and start again. I will say that I am really looking forward to the P2 Stores to arrive... That will definitely help a lot.

Unfortunately, I’m afraid I can’t show anyone any clips. I’m not under contract from anyone telling me not too, it’s just a personal choice. But I will say that the explosions look fantastic in slow motion!!

That’s it for now. I’ll check in again in a few weeks. Take care.

Marc, thanks for your perspective on this - and best of luck with the shooting.

By the way, how many cards are you working with?
And how many, in your opinion (and for your purposes) would you consider to be the minimum you'd feel comfortable working with?

Marc,
How do you dump p2's in the back of Afghanistan?
Do you carry AC generator, laptop & fw-disks?
Panny's Toughbook and LaCie's Rugged disks?
Could you enlighten us about your planned workflow?
