Some analysis of the 5 camera shootout I found!

I was doing some file clean up and came across some analysis I did a few months ago on the 5 camera test shoot out that Barry Green put together in January. This file showed splits of the same target areas within the frame from each camera. It was a good testing of what the raw camera heads are capable of. I thought I would share this since I completely had forgot about this analysis I slapped together in March. It was useful for me, so maybe it will help those people on the fence as well.

This is the full size picture. Click this to see where the image below is taken from.

This is the center section of the image link above. However, I think it shows some very interesting things when looking closer.

Hey, Michael and or Barry - in retrospect and now that you've had a good thrash with the HVX and the others,
do you think that you'd get them closer to the 900 ?

(I mean if I had to make a decision based on looking at these - there ain't NOOO comparison. Colour aside, nothing is close to the 900 - the others look soft, mushy, whatever.)

Hi Robbo,

There closer than farther from the F900. The F900 is a $100,000 + camera, the hvx for instance is a $5,400 camera. One of the things you'll notice is how well the HVX color is and accurate like the f900. Notice the grey card, and how clean it is rendered on the HVX200. The one thing it does show is that the XLH1 is not equal or better than the F900. It's more on par with the varicam. The aliasing on the Canon concerned me from day one, it's very bad compared to the other cameras. However to put this all into perspective, were talking sub 10K cameras that get farther ahead then they should for the money. Compared to DV, were getting images of gold from any of these cameras. All the cameras can do the job...

Cheers Michael - and thanks.
hellova difference in price - I understand.

I was more sort of wondering that if you shot the same thing again whether the images would look closer. Now that guys have had a chance to really get to grips with these smaller cams - focusing, colour, detail coring etc; etc; and so on.
(I presume no-one really did much of a setup on the Varicam - looks dark. But put that cam to one side.)

tia & cheers, r

in that pic doesnt the HD100 look closer to F900 than anything else? and varicam sooo dark..

IMO - apart from the 900 they all look a bit weird
out of focus - colour out of whack.

Would love to see a re-shoot.

Get Barry onto it and see how they match up now we're 4 or so months down the track. (A wish only - sure you all understand).
I'd be surprised if he or someone with his experience couldn't get sooo close to the 900 now.

I personally can't beleive how bad the Varicam looks and yeah, I agree - based on that shoot only the JVC would have to be the clear winner for "little" cam.

Is it me, or is the HVX a little out of focus / blurrier than the rest? Maybe it doesn't have artificial sharpening?

Did you beat your subject prior to your shoot? She doesn't look too happy. ;>) and yes the HVX DOES look out of focus.

I recall the chart was the focus point, so DOF plays a big role in the out of focus look. The actor was in front of the chart with some distance. Take a look at that section. One thing you'll notice is the lack of major aliasing. Another thing to look at is the grey card for noise..

Thank you very much Michael! I visited your website and I found this link. Very useful and as usual, it resumes the point.

EDIT -- And for sure, :dankk2: also to Barry who gave us this shootout opportunity! Now we hope for the next chapter!
