Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

Wow, that's really nice. Hopefully I'll be shooting like that soon....

Did you get that depth of field effect with the stock lens?

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

hey thanks guys, it really means alot , cause i know from being a critic myself that getting a compliment from dvxuser.com, is like milking a cat somtimes!  but i am my own worst enemy and critic..helps me push myself to always get better  ..cause i need to. so thans again ..it was all shot either stock or anamorphic .

be sure to watch all the shorts.. dan lahav has one uploading now too!!

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

Great looking! I love the running in the water shot.

One suggestion.. after he fired the gun.. there was a fairly close up shot of the nozzle. It'd be sweet if you can add some smoke in post coming out of the nozzel.

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

Awesome. I love the look you got with these shots.
Kinda reminds me of The Hunted.

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

IAL,

On that third shot how did you get that stop action frame grab w/o the associated motion blur that I get if I try to grab an action frame? or was it the shutter speed you were using?

Please share.... Thanks!

Dave

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

it is almost all due to the shutter speed, but i was also moving with the actor as he was running. .

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

IAL we will need a making of next time round . . . soldier is truly great & the actor did a great job also! WHat do you post in IAL?

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

thanks man :) -PPRO to edit-, but the making of would be pretty boring it would be two guys in this wreckage out in the woods saying:

me :"ok , ..but be determined as you walk by the breaks in the wall....you know what i mean... same as before.. and im going to walk out here and try to keep the pace with you. ...try not to change distance from the wall at all, or you will go out of focus.."

actor: " ok .. so ..like this?"

me: "yeah, but remember to look semi frantic..like your scared.. they are out there somewhere, and your all alone"

actor:" k"

me: " aghhh!!!! "

actor: "what!?"

me: " a rabbit just jumped out from the bush right next to me.. scared the living daylights out of me..lol"

actor: " that bush right there?!"

me: "yeah, i was just standing here and it .. ow! hold on.. i got another thorn in my arm.. "

...

..so as you can tell it wouldnt be interesting at all . the only parts worth watching would be when i ran into a huge rock when running with the camera trying to follow him and fell. or when the actor almost got stuck in the stream cause the mud was so deep in one spot, and i just stood there laughing at him. the rabbit incident wasnt really that exciting.. :P

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

IAL -

Once again... Many props for the great work. I have 2 questions for you.

1. Where did Flight and Soldier go?

2. I'm curious... How much tweaking did you do in post to achieve the fabulous image quality in soldier? If post played a major role in achieving this look would you be willing to show us a frame grab of the raw footage. Or, is this vintage DVX work in the hands of an extremely gifted film maker? I ask only to better understand the capabilities of this great camera and the role that post can play in the image making process.

Once again - great work.

Dave

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

hey thanks dave!

ill try to answer the ?'s for ya specifically.

1. flight and soldier had to come off the web for a while because i tripled my gracious hosts bandwidth for last month.. which is not good. i will be paying for it of course, but i'll put them back up when i can.. probably beginning of next month or so.

2. post did the specific look for soldier. but no special filters or softwrae or anything was used.. it didnt even take much tweaking as far as time spent.. mostly just a basic desaturation of the image. i didnt do anything to the image besides the basic color correction/enhancement. ill post a raw pic or two for comparision when i have time.

Thanks for the response. The education continues!

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

"basic desaturation of the image" makes it look great.

That first picture really is incredible. Good Job again IAL! :)

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

I must say I love the first pic, too!

Looks like something straight out of a Hollywood production 8)

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

lol.. here, looking at these, should encourage anyone who thinks their images are just normal looking, and push them to learn how to color correct/enhance. really, just as someone stated on another post somewhere on the board earlier today(i cant remember, and have no idea who or where..oh yeah ..talking about "man on fire", and it's "look") i think most people would be suprised to look at what big productions look like before color correction. the silly part is that they look very plain, and normal. and people try to compare the DVX uncut images to the heavily color corrected ones they see in finished productions on the big screen.. which again is just silly. they say "it doesnt look like film" film is more this or that.. but if they actually say the big productions unedited stuff.. they would be suprised at how unglorious most  films look in their pre-color correction days.. anyway.. heres some stills from my unglorious unedited reel for comparision. still film like in representation, but no style or "look" whatsoever...like a cookie made without sugar..

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

Well put IAL.

I was watching the SF on Master and Commander DVD and they had before and afters and the before grabs are really uninspiring. And they come from the 35mm big guns.

Re: some  grabs from my dvxuser contest entry

Thank you for that IAL. I've been messing with my DVX100a and I wasn't getting the look I wanted. Close...but not...So I started changing lights and started looking into filters and then it dawned on me...POST!

I was going to make a thread asking how important is post, color correction, etc...
But thanks to these pics...You've said it perfectly!
