Solution to Firewire port problem?

I was going to use my dad's old firewire but it wasn't the right one for my dvx. So instead he had a Dazzle (company name) DV-bridge and it hooks into the dvx via RCA cables and then to the computer via my dad's old firewire.

Question: Can this be bad in any way to capture like this?
Also, Since people are always scared about the DVX firewire port wearing out, couldn't this be a way to capture and not use the firewire port if you don't have another cheaper DV camera handy? Tim.

Re: Solution to Firewire port problem?

When you use DVX's firewire port, you got digital signal and your footage is "copied" from camera to hard drive. When using analog (RCA), then digital signal is converted to analog inside camera and again converted to digital in your capture card: acceptable format for computer's hard drive. So...picture quality is not so good anymore after these convertings.

Re: Solution to Firewire port problem?

Hardly anyone is worried about their firewire port wearing out... it's sturdy enough. What people are worried about it putting wear on their tape heads, which happens any time your wind or rewind tape inside the tape mechanism. You should still avoid using the DVX to capture.

And if a firewire port is wrong for your cable, a 4-pin to 6-pin adapter (or vice-versa) can be had for a few dollars and will not give you any generational loss as an analog capture device will.

Re: Solution to Firewire port problem?

Ok, I get it. I am buying a new firewire tonite, I was just real anxious to mess around w/ Vegas and some footage from the dvx. Do you know if Best Buy will have acceptable firewire?

Re: Solution to Firewire port problem?

Best Buy's cables are fine, but it's cheaper to buy one online. Not faster, but cheaper. ;D

Re: Solution to Firewire port problem?

Does anyone know of any 90 degree 4-pin cables? I am more worried about connectors sticking straight out to the side which ALWAYS get caught or snagged. If I had a dollar for every 1/8 connector i've seen snapped...yada yada yada

Re: Solution to Firewire port problem?

That's a very good question, pennred, and I share your concern...
