Solo - The Smart Drone from 3D Robotics

My only concern with this 3D robotics proposition is range. I heard the FPV only goes as far as 500m, vs the 1km of Phantom3. Is this true? Would like to have confirmation on this. Mileage obviously varies concerning location to location, but I end to get 700m from my Phantom as the limit. I'm afraid that, following same reasoning, I would be getting about 300 from 3d Robotics. Would be nice to hear about this from them!
Sérgio, it is 800m, not 500m.

E :-)

The range quoted is up to 804 meters (1/2 mile), that'll be unobstructed.

10×4.5″ self-tightening props
880 kV motors
OK, you beat me... but you've also added another information on topic.

One nice thing about the Phantom 3 is that as a beginner I could get footage that wouldn't have that typical wide angle distortion at the 94 degree view it has. Is there a way to avoid that on the current GoPro and still keep at least that FOV without having to fix it in post? It seems the Phantom 3 is the biggest competition for this one. But I like all the presets this one has.

I'm trying to find the maximum payload weight... For the GoPro you can remove fisheye either with the free GoPro software or you can remove it in Adobe, if you don't want to do it in post you can get a GoPro modified with a 5.4mm lens or even opt for the Ribcage mod.

There's one point of confusion on the height the 400ft isn't from sea level, it's 400ft above your take off height, so keep that in mind. It's setting that can be overridden (not sure on the process people would use yet), but it's a standard feature of Arducopter to allow you to change the height limit.

P13, would be great if 3D Robotics had a easy to change setting in its SOLO app., or maybe an advanced menu with a DISCLAIMER before, warning the user of the legal issues, etc. That way everyone would be informed and would be changing the settings at their own risk.

A good suggestion. I posted this on the Facebook page for you and 3DR have read it...

The payload weight has been confirmed as around 500g.

3DR have said they're working on an "endurance pack" as an optional extra, this is a set of 4 higher power motors along with a higher power battery, I'm hoping this means more lifting power.

The motors on the Solo are designed to be easily swapped out by the user, it's 4 screws and no soldering is required.

Thanks for digging this up, P13. Also good to hear about the expansion pack. I'm fantasizing about flying a BM Micro cam on this thing. Of course, I'm waiting to see the images it captures. Great thread!

Nice information. Imagine it with an iPhone 6 Plus powered by 3K MoviePro @120Mbps setup...

You know, if this Drone performs in flight better than my Phantom 2 v1, with similar range, I will definitely order. What I find great about this product is that it is fully integrated with the Gopro 4. I really like that little camera. With Protune, at 4K, it can really, really punch way above its weight, specially for scenic video shooting. Yes, its a fisheye, but easily corrected in post. Also, having this possibility to use a Blackmagic on it can be truly groundbreaking. If they can allow this, I can assure its going to revolutionise the aerial shooting scene. That is probably the KEY factor to take away the market share from DJI. DJI's biggest handicap right now (but something they consider an advantage) is relying on their "own" integrated camera. DJI doesn't understand that a good camera goes beyond using the same sensor or a relatively good lens vs the competition. The software side is as important. By working with, leaving camera development to third parties- whose main business is building cameras- and trying to integrate them the best way in their drones, 3D robotics can truly make an important impact on the industry.

I'm working on a video detailing the spec. of the Solo in detail, a few errors were found with the 1st version, so I've removed to tweak....

Really looking forward to this. My Phantom 2 has served me very well, but its time to retire and I really want to upgrade. If I can make it fly up to 400 meters (more than enough, I'm just giving it a limit) and have a range of 600 meters (also worst case scenario), and if the stabiliser is as good as the Zenmuse- its something I'm not sure, P13, its the gymbal as stable as the Zenmuse?- I will take the jump.

Cheers and thanks for keeping us up to date!

This one looks awesome. I always wanted to buy the Inspire 1. However, since they didn't want me to use the Go Pro 4 it was a very tough decision. The cost was another aspect. Now I am very happy that this Solo looks to clearly fill my needs.

I cant verify this yet but I read via a 3DR source the payload is now up to 800g and they are still tweaking.

I can't answer many specifics on the spec in this video, other than it's correct, the Pixhawk 2 in the Solo has a wealth of sensors which goes someway to explain why it costs more than the Phantom. The intent is to make flight more precise, it has the knock on benefit of redundancy too.

I've not seen the gimbal in action myself, but 3DR hardware staff designed the gimbal from the ground up and are convinced it's something special.

I've heard the 800g payload rumour on the Solo users Facebook page but no one credible has confirmed it, at least not publicly. The payload was said to be the same as the IRIS+ which suggests there's a difference between what it can lift and what it's comfortable lifting.

The following is pure speculation from my point of view, but it appears that the Solo has way more sensors than its competitors, accelerometers etc..
I think this is more than just redundancy, perhaps the control unit in the Solo interrogates all the sensors during flight and produces or uses a smoothing algorithm or an average reading hence its ability to produce the stunning camera moves we have all seen. I have chatted to one very experienced drone guy (online)who flew it at NAB in the arena. He described it as having a lot of thrust and being incredibly agile.
Thou we are still waiting to see raw footage to see if 3DR have delivered.

You're correct, you've got almost 3 flight controllers worth of sensors in one flight controller, DJI gear typically has just a single IMU and one of each sensor. It's actually (I'm told) for smoother, more accurate flight, with the benefit of also providing redundancy as a consequence.
