solid state hard drive for DVX

someone told me they may not be making mini dv tape much longer....

you know how there are those external firewire capture drives you can buy that are brutally expensive? (like this)

I'm wondering why we can't buy a solid state drive.. you can get like 160GB for $100.00 now... and hook it up to firewire and record to it?

there must be some sort of interface that can be used between the drive and the firewire.

and we need power too.

can it be done? what parts do we need? is that more cost effective than the link above... OR buying an HVX200?

I doubt availability of miniDV tape will go away in the near future. Hi8 tape is still made. Firewire is going away faster than tapes.

I use the Sony MIRC1 to record to my DVX100B on CF cards, either to both tape and card simultaneously or to card alone without a tape in cam, and it works flawlessly. An added advantage is that you can download from tape to these units from the camera or from a deck so you can pull the files to computer without the need for firewire capture. Works with DV, DVCAM, and HDV.

I used a DVX100 with a firewire recorder for a couple of years. I used one made by these guys:

It was great and made editing a snap. You can get one used for a very reasonable price. there is one on ebay now a

Um, they're a different class... SD to HD.

great info thanks guys! One reason I like to keep the dvx is because a) we get nothing to sell them and b) Im still inspired by the images that this guy gets! He uses a 35mm lens adapter...I guess thats 2 reasons ;) he even "up resolutions" his images to HD and they are still perfectly clear!
