Solid Camera EVF mount

Thanks, it's a good idea - I did not want to take away from the Alphatron discussion and it was definitely going that way.

First EVF supports are shipping today. I will upload a pic soon. Abel Cine is stocking the system, but we are also delivering pre-orders from before Abel came on as a dealer. Even though we have a web store, they will be able to create a better purchase experience than us.

Glad to see so much interest - we are already getting started on the next run! The 15mm iris rod bracket should be available soon as well which allows the support to work on any camera with iris rods (that's a lot of options)

Very nice design! i will be getting this as soon as i order my Alphatron. I passed on first batch delivery from Cinequip White as I want some more feedback from first buyers/beta testers... But, this mount shoud be "kit" with the evf... Just saying...

Does the Generic Mount for the Solid Camera unit also work with the SmallHD DP4-EVF in terms of accommodating the HDMI input connector?

I spoke to Carlos at the shop a few weeks ago. He mentioned they were working on a new mount that would accommodate the HDMI connector attaching to the SmallHD DP4-EVF. The present one at the time wouldn't work. Unfortunately side mounting the DP4-EVF would not be a good long term solution as the 1/4-20 hole on the sides is attached to a plastic insert and not the frame metal frame of the EVF.

It appears from Mitch's video that the generic plate he was wielding would allow the HDMI connector to pass through the cutout in the plate but I am not sure.

Mitch or Carlos could one of you chime in?

The GP cradle is designed to work with the DP4 - you have two options to clear the HDMI IN cable on the bottom. You can offset the EVF toward the rear and have full side to side motion or mount it in the middle and the HDMI cable will limit the right/left sliding.

Hi Steven,

What happened to your evf rig with the DP4 and the Edelkrone EVF Holder?

It was not working OK for you?

DP4 is working for now OK with F3. Edelkrone mount is good for DP4. Don't get me wrong, but Solid Camera system is totally different league from Edelkrone. At least from all the info. It seems to be... My issue is with DP4. Although being a fanboy of SmallHD, I just discovered that my DP4 is unusable with my 5D MKII! Because of start/stop delay. My screen goes blue and lag is like 3 sec. Before picture appears. I talked with SmallHD and they are "working on it"((!!!)... In the meantime, I have to use my $150 Lilliput monitor for 5D ( has no lag, no blue screen, no issues!...).
So, I am holding off on Alphatron until I can get a feedback if there is any issues with F3 or Canon 5D like I have with this POS DP4! I don't want to spend big bucks and find out the same issue like the one I have now.
Back to EVF mount: if I buy Alphatron, I will get Solid Camera mount as it looks perfect fit and long lasting option. If I get Alphatron, DP4 is gone as well as Edelkrone mount...

How come the DP4 does not work OK with your 5DM2???

We should have the same outfit and it has been working extremely well so far...
About 2-3 months ago we ordered a new the DP4-EVF Bundle at the NAB Special price and is fantastic!
I'm almost 98% sure about this, but I'll check it up again tomorrow morning and I'll post results later.
In fact we do have 2 DP4s so I'll check with both EVFs...

We do certainly have a 5-seconds lag to view the SD recording signal that the 5DM2 outputs when converted to HDSDI thru our Blackmagic or AJA converters to our Panasonic HDSDI monitors... But not 100% sure about that with the DP4s...

I'll post my findings tomorrow.

I am very disappointed!
i got DP4 with the first possible shipment last year... I have been using it with great success on F3 since then. Even having 5D MKII for 4 years, I never needed to put DP4 on it ( I used all other options, and dp4 was always part of F3 kit...). So the other day I took it out, updated firmware and tried to hook it up with my DSLR and I got a terrible few seconds blue screen every time I started or stopped the record!!!
I called SmallHD right away and talked to support only to be told that this is "normal" for 5D and that is happening with every monitor or evf when you connect to 5D(???). I said that's not correct! I used Zacuto evf several times and my Liliput monitor all the time and there is no blue screen or any issue when hit record or stop...
than the same day later I got the "official" email from SmallHD explaining the "known" issue and that they are "working on it"...

Another issue that is crap with even F3 is that when you switch to 1:1 mapping, screen goes to the left top corner of the image, not the center. This was not happening before... Is this the issue with latest firmware? I don't know...

Sorry, for hijacking the tread...

This happened with V1.2 Firmware - I contacted Small HD in early Feb this year to tell them of the issue - the only option until new firmware solves the problem is to go back to previous firmware.

I received my Solid Camera Alphatron mount this morning. What a beautifully executed piece of mechanical art. It mounted to my F3's Berkey top plate in seconds and the Alphatron seconds later. My only current question relates to tensioning. I understand that the friction, although more than adequate with the factory setting, can be adjusted. However, I have yet to determine how to go about doing so if it should become necessary in the future. Any comments?

Thank you!

The black knobs "Tension Knob" on the rotating joints are what does the adjustments. Turn it clockwise for more tension and counter for less. On the extension arm, we also added a hard lock if the tension is not enough. The hard lock will engage in 24 positions as you rotate it around. I think I will make a video of this when I get back to the office next week.

How much amount of travel do you have to adjust this EVF mount from the camera (lateral movement like an ENG camera)- I like to press my cheek right up agaisnt the camera : )
Looks like a nice design!

Me too. There are two places that allow lateral movement. The first is the dovetail mount on the camera that slides left/right. There are two to choose from, but the adjustment to the right is about the same for each one. Second is the cradle, the dedicated Alphatron cradle is not adjustable, but it is kind of in the cheek hugging position for most operators. The optional GP cradle is the "General Purpose" mount that allows a very large lateral travels at the expense of being bigger. The GP also works great with many LCD displays less than 6".
