FEATURE: Soldier of Destiny

My first drama (not sure I'd like to do another one).
Even with the Afghanistan and Ethiopia backdrops it is really a challenge to make an entertaining dramatic piece.

I tackled this project because I believe that the core drive of any story needs to be emotion and this was an excellent opportunity to push that side of my creative ability to its limit.

Almost done with post, really focusing on picking up the energy of the laggy bits with the right score, not easy at all.

For the nerds:
Shot on Sony F3 422 10bit 25p to a Samurai
Some bits with the Phantom (Lordy what an awesome machine!).
Edited in Ppro CS6
Scored in Cubase

Final mix in Pro Tools.
Graded in Davinci Resolve.

Things I will change for the next shoot:
Gonna upgrade to Sony F5, dont need to though, the F3 is by far the best bang for buck offering out there!
Really love working in PPro CS6 but gonna have to move over to Media Composer to make life easier for final mix in Pro Tools and grade in Davinci.
Mercury playback engine is the best thing since 9gag!

To get around budget limitations, we shot 90% of the film outdoors in daylight and location scouted for maximum production value backgrounds.

Our motto when location scouting is 'forget the foreground, we want FIVEground and SIXground!'

I am willing to answer any questions any aspiring film makers might have.

Not the most technical guy around but I know how to get a project off the paper and onto the screen, if I can help anyone with advice I certainly will.

These forums are my film school!

Glad to see you rolling right along.

Strong point: Slow mo starting at 1:30 with guy falling backwards into water. Many thumbs up here.

Something to work on: Post audio. ie. The opening with silouettes of helicopters. Like completely immerse us in the sound here to reinforce the image.

Thanks Craig.
Will certainly have a look at that opening shot.

That water shot was done with the Phantom.
They had to tie me down with barbed wire and threaten my children to pry it from my fingers, damn that cam is cool!
