Soften the Canon look.

Watch a couple of Blu-Ray Hollywood movies they are not softening anything. If you want soft get yourself a mini dv cam. Filmic doesn't mean soft.

I think it does mean soft (or organic). I believe folks are wishing for the detail to stay but the harshness to go. Film is not harsh and that’s most likely due to its analog nature….just like CD’s vs. Vinyl records. The 5D ll, to me at least, always looked harsh (compared to film) but very detailed. This is also one of the reasons why I always thought the DVX looked more filmic than a lot of cams (its lower resolution image gave it a more pleasing feel to it, yet it kept its Standard Definition details well).

Here is a quick still photo grabbed in my kitchen using nothing but under cabinet lighting: Super Takumar 50/1.4 wide open...

go into the user file custom loo ksettings thing, and make one where the "sharpness" is all the way down. it helps with the edge enhancement that makes it look unnatural.

Adding a diffusing filter like the BPM will also help with aliasing (I believe, as I don't own a 7D yet) but I recommend using Tiffen Classic Softs over a BPM unless you specifically like the look of a BPM. BPMs will crush your blacks even more - and you may not want that.
Classic Softs are an expensive set to own though. I've only used them on rental shows.
