Soft Image on HVX202

I have just started previewing footage shot this year on my HXV202 in 720 25PN (through an NX card on EdiusPro 4) and have to say the footage is much softer than stuff shot with my JVC HD101 (HDV 720 25P). Has anyone else noticed this? Wide angle shots with lots of trees moving in the breeze seem clearer with the HVX but close ups ect are much softer compared to the JVC.

PS most my work is done outdoors with a polarising filter.

A lot of people turn up the detail settings on the hvx.

Are you using a quality polarizer?

Yes same polariser I was using on the JVC, this is very disturbing. I was hoping DVCPRO HD via the HVX would be much crisper than HDV. I can sharpen it up in the NLE, but am still surprised. Hopefully it will not show when downrez'd to DVD.

The HVX makes a compromise between the ultra sharp HD look and that softer filmic look, often refered to as "Pana Mojo".
If your doing nature docs or alike, your probably looking for that crisp Discovery look, Barrys HVX book shows a setting called "DETAIL" optimized for maximum "sharpness", haven´t needed it so far, but maybe this is a solution.
I believe that´s why Disjecta changed to the A1 to get that crisp look for his nature docs...

I can sharpen it up quite a bit in Edius, but was surprised by just how soft it was compared to HDV. It is weird because the DVCPRO codec is obviously holding up on things like busy backgrounds (leaves moving on trees) and sunlight glint etc but yet the whole image seems slightly fuzzy almost as if I've been shooting around F11.

I can't remeber exactly what it was but on Barry's DVD he mentions when the apeture goes over 8 (I think) then there's a big drop in sharpness (30%?). You are using your ND's to get in the camera's sweet spot? Also, have a play around with the detail settings, maybe hook it up to a plasma/lcd for easier viewing. If your detail settings are 0 then yup, it's gonna be a bit soft.

Seems a bit silly to set the camera up as soft from factory. I made sure my F stop was well below 8 where ever possible by using the ND filters in conjunciton with the polariser. As a side note I realised last night I was previewing my footage on an HDV1280x720P timeline not a 960x720 DVC PRO HD timeline (opened up the P2 viewer in a 1280x720 Canopus HQ timeline), this has helped somewhat (why I dont know unless it has something to do with scaling the 960x720 to 1280x720?) but the image is still soft so obviously I will have to take this into account in future. Anyone have any recommendations on how high I can go on the detail settings in camera rather than relying on doing it in post?

BTW DVCPRO HD footage is a dream to edit :-)

the JVC and the HVX resolve about the same resolution. the JVC just has Beastly amounts of edge enhancement going on. The HVX200 is set up to have very little edge enhancement. Crank it up and see how it looks. I find the 1080p to look the best. crisper sharper and more detial everywhere.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Just for the record I can easily correct the footage using a sharpness filter so no real problem. I would have liked to have shot in 1080 but did not have enough P2 cards and found the P2 store did not like temps above 35Deg C, so had to make do. A lot of this will not show because I will be delivering to DVD anyway. In some ways I probably should have shot in DVC PRO50, but found I was doing a lot of 50FPS shots to steady up my pans ect so stuck with 720PN.

720PN would be a good choice for you JP, otherwise it would be non stop dumping footage.
