Soft focus problem- differs on LCD playback versus LCD during capture?

Just finished a very long day, shooting mostly in and out of the rain, running and gunning it with the DVX100A all over NYC. We got all of our shots, but much to my horror, when I played back a few sections on the LCD screen after we wrapped, the focus appeared to be quite noticeably soft in some (most?) of the shots.

Admittedly, I didn't have access to a field monitor today, but I did carefully follow my usual procedure for focusing a shot--Manual focus setting, zoomed in all the way, got sharp focus, then zoomed back out and recomposed the shot. The focus looked quite sharp--to myself, the director, the art director, etc.-- in the LCD at all times during recording. However, the playback later in the day looked out of focus. Are my eyes just playing tricks on me?

I'm a bit flabbergasted, as I've never had this problem before with this camera--even the times I haven't used a monitor the focus has been pretty darn sharp based just on my eye and the LCD screen. Nonetheless, I'm trying to get to the bottom of this before tomorrow's day begins at 7AM. Any advice? Is this a back focus problem? (The camera is from a mostly reliable NYC rental house, but it's the first time I've used this particular DVX100A.)

The only real difference I can think of from past shoots is that I had to today I had to use the ND .9 (1/8) in the camera 'cause the skies were so hot all day...could this be the source of a problem? Any other settings mess with focus that I might have missed?

Many thanks in advance,

Did you use the EVF DTL button above the scene file? This is a must when focusing without a monitor.

No, but I'll never forget it again--thank you for the suggestion. Just not sure why I had such bad results today without, as I haven't used it in the past, but have always had pretty sharp focus...

Regards,
David
