So who here edits for a living?

Re: So who here edits for a living?

I shoot, edit, design, composite, mix, produce, program, and lay the funk for a living.

Re: So who here edits for a living?

haha Dan you bring back memories

I learned ZERO from Ofield. Hated the class.

I now produce/edit for San Diego County's gov't TV channel (County Television Network). We get to be creative and have a long leash.

Hey Moog-
Havent actually taken any of his classes yet. I'm kind of surprised... I must say, he's an excellent connection and has been amazing about helping me out. Thanks for the heads up though  ;D

BTW what year did you graduate?

Is this laying of the funk difficult at all?[/quote]

It takes many years of practice boys... don't try it at home. ;)

I'm from the class of 1992. A number of my colleagues are in agreement that Ofield was out of his league trying to teach an advanced film class. Durbin was much much better. Maybe Ofield has improved his teaching skills since then. I got really tired watching other students' dailies with virtually no comment from Mr Ofield. Nice.

Conversely, I got a lot out of the video classes. More hands-on, with profs who motivated you to do well.

Re: So who here edits for a living?

If someone comes to you and asks you JUST to edit a project for them and you do so including graphic work and special fx, etc. then when it is done get your money and hand over the tape, are you legally allowed to copyright the video that you just edited for someone else even though you did not shoot it? I am mainly speaking of independent editors that do not work for a production company. It would seem like you could because it is your vision that you chose to edit the project the way you did.

Re: So who here edits for a living?

Not really, it's contract labor. They're paying for your services.

Re: So who here edits for a living?

As Kai said, that would sound more like a "work for hire" situation, where the employer owns the copyright for having commissioned you to do the work. But, it depends on how the contract is worded. If it doesn't specifically say that it's a work for hire, the issue gets muddled, because whoever is supplying the footage to you would own the copyright to that imagery, and you couldn't then copyright their work without proper rights (it may qualify as a "derivative work", and the rights to a derivative work vest with the original copyright holder). So what you do may be uncopyrightable because you don't own the rights to the images you used.

But hey, what do I know, I'm no lawyer! -- let's wait for our favorite barristers Monglane or Jimerson to set us straight! ;)

Re: So who here edits for a living?

yeah.. its kinda like the color timer trying to copyright the footage you just shot.. you cant do it.
