Didnt know where to post this really, but anyway....
I know almost everyone here uses some type of NLE but who here makes a living from it?
I'm asking because i just finished collage and am about to enter the working world. What im really looking for is advice from people that are in the industry already. To tell you the truth im kinda scared, but my work has been praised all throughout my four years in school so i guess im doing things right. as far as applying for jobs what should i go for in this early state of mine? Also whats the starting pay for an editor? i dont know, i have a buch of questions running throughmy head right now but cant seem to type them out, so i'll add to this post if anyone is willing to become my temp. mentor for the moment ;D
I just want to know what im about to get myself into.

-Thanks

Re: So who here edits for a living?

I'm an editor with a local home video/television company...all of my work normally includes editing Bar and Bat Mitzvahs though! :P

Re: So who here edits for a living?

would you mind running me through how you got that position dan? like point A to B.
Congrats on the new job though!!
do you know what NLE they will be using?

Re: So who here edits for a living?

Hey infokill-
A film professor of mine, Jack Ofield (who has won about 5 emmy's for his work on his PBS show "the short list") gave my name to them knowing that i was interested in an editing position. I'm a film student at San Diego State University and it helps to know people, and have people know you.

NBC called back a week later for a formal interview with the head editors. I had a very meager demo reel, so i didnt think they would be interested at all... Plus I had no experience editing news whatsoever. Luckily, they passed the reel around the department and people praised me on my work. I didnt (and still don't) think that it was anything special...

I've been training for several weeks mainly on Grassroots NewsEdit XL (kind of a dumbed-down version of premiere) and Avid iNews. Now that i've become proficient enough in the programs and the way the station runs, they've offered me a editor position.

Re: So who here edits for a living?

Congrats Dan, I'm sure you'll do a great job. Let us know how you're coming along. BTW, it's Grass Valley.

Re: So who here edits for a living?

Thanks Barry-
LoL oops. It is indeed Grass VALLEY. Man, my brain is fried... i've been editing since 3AM  :P

Re: So who here edits for a living?

sounds good.
it seems like you were in the same position i'm in now ;D
so i guess training is givin and you donthave to know everything going in.
Thanks a lot dan and good luck!

Re: So who here edits for a living?

Of course you could go to work for yourself (if you have the equipment) instead of working for the man. I have owned my own production company for 9 years..and just like any business..I started small (just me) and as my client list grew, so did my business. I am still very small, however I do employ a full time editor to take care of all the stuff that I don't hve time to edit. If you can gets some good equipment....camera..NLE...you can make some good jack.

BTW...I pay my editor $500 a week.

Re: So who here edits for a living?

thats sounds good too. i have my dvx ;D and my own computer. that would build up my resume also i guess.

Dan, Are you working for the NBC Network or an NBC affiliate?

Re: So who here edits for a living?

I work at NBC San Diego, which is an affiliate.

Once I accomplish some sort of reputation at NBC, I'm hoping the recent merger with Universal will benefit me since my true dream is to edit film. A pipe dream? perhaps... but I can still dream  :P

Re: So who here edits for a living?

Congrats Dan! Didn't take you long at all. So what part of the reel did they like the most eh? (MV MV MV j/k) :P

Re: So who here edits for a living?

LoL thanks guys. Yeah man, they loved the MV! i incoorporated into 3 other short films i created. I gave you credits at the end with your website...so if NBC-Universal gives you a call to be DP for their new blockbuster, you'll know why ;D

Re: So who here edits for a living?

No need to credit me on there...besides I don't need NBC calling me for anything...might violate my pending 3 picture deal with Paramount*. ;D

*you do know i'm talking about the Paramount Wedding Chapel right?

Re: So who here edits for a living?

Well I shoot and edit for a TV station in the 4th market as my full time gig. I however, have my own edit suite at home and just spent 17 hours on Monday working on a 6 minute video that I finally completed last night. Last week, I spent about 3 hours editing a 4 second special effect for that same video! So to answer the post...I shoot and edit for a living! :)
