So it's been some time since these stickies have been posted and depths of some of these threads have twists and turns and suggestions and updates, etc, etc. I can't keep up

What is THE BEST pulldown removal tool- (time is not an issue), I'm looking for the best looking footage. with 4:2:2 chroma, true 24p footy!

I'm on a MBP w/ FCP 6.0.6, I've got compressor, JES, MPEG streamclip.

I've been shooting 720p60 to avoid the MUD, pretty much since I got the GH-1 last July. But, I'm considering shooting 1080p24- taking into consideration of locking down shots, no whip-pans, etc.

I recently saw Barry Green talk about shooting almost all of "Depth of Phil" in 1080p24 and it looks great, (the trailer that is).

Ben B. what do you shoot, and which tool for PDR, (pulldown removal), do you use?

Anyone else please chime in- I need a consensus on this!!

I've been using FCP's log/transfer to get pro res, then running those through JES using the method outlined in the sticky in this section. I've been totally happy with how the footage looks. Fast enough for me too. It's the only method I've used though, so I can't make any comparisons.
 
Thanks Ryan- Yeah, log & trans to prores is a must. I've done a pretty extensive comparison between JES, Compressor, and Mpeg streamclip.

JES- felt like it made the footage too contrasty and darker, as well as does this weird frame blend motion thing. It was fast and the files were smaller but was out of the race for me.
 
I use FCP to log and transfer to ProRes and then I use Compressor (specifically I make a droplet and use that so I don't even have to open the software) to remove the pulldown. I typically shoot 1080/24p but sometimes shoot 720p. For most real projects I shoot 1080.
 
Please include WIndows in this too... cause all I know of now is neoscene... and it's files are too huge...
 
I found TMPenc to work best for me. I like the versatility and I found that the video it produces is on par with the best of all the other PDR programs I've tried.
 
neo scene for windows. tmpenc? it doesn't properly remove pulldown i thought. and expect huge files. it's 2010, 1TB hdds are cheap.

OSX PLEASE!!!! Truly I 'd love for all the Windows Users out there to benefit from this thread but selfishly I need to know what's going to work on my MBP!!

Yeah I am. And for converting 720/60p to 24p I am either just dropping in the Final Cut timeline or using Compressor and JDS's mtethod on the shots where that doesn't quite look right (there is a sticky.)

Yes I am just dragging the clips from my capture scratch to a droplet, set to source output with a new filename, and then deleting all the old clips in the finder and final cut, and dragging the new ones in. You could use reconnect but why bother.

On this big project we're doing right now, where every shot is slated with scene, shot, and take number (for sound but also to keep the footage organized) the editor and assistants are labeling all the footage based on the slate (05_03_01 for scene 5, shot 3, take 1) in the finder as opposed to in final cut. That way if we ever need to retranscode and reconnect the footage if the prime drive and main backup fail, they'll have to relabel everything, but it means that we don't have to keep a spreadsheet of which cards were transcoded when and in what order in order to get the AVCHD numerical sequencing thing right. God I miss P2 and its random file names.

Not that I know of. It has specific options for removing pulldown.

I only say TMPGenc because when I tried neoscene I kept getting strange blocking in the backgrounds when converting my files. I couldn't get around it at all no matter what settings I tried to change(there aren't that many) in neoscene. In TMPGenc I never had a problem with that strange blocking until one day when I was messing with settings and clicked a box "motion compensation" or something. That produced the same blocky-ness as neoscene.

Drop the 1080p file on an Edius 5 24p timeline, edit your heart out, render it and you end up with a beautiful 24p edit. No additional pulldown removal software. Nothing else needed. Neo 2 Booster should work the same way.
