Jarred, you indicated that the reason that the XL2 was not HDV would become apparent today. So.....?

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

Jarred- don't know if I missed your "scoop" in another thread but what did you mean by your statement?...with close to 200 views you certainly have everyone's interest....so, was it just a hunch you had or some inside info?

Please- do tell

Thanks in advance

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

lol.. no big deal really, just that there is no HDV with 24p spec and Canon had to do 24p over the HD, as the DVX was killing them.

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

Interesting...

If Panasonic can do the whole 2:3:3:2 pulldown thing within the HDV spec and release a DVX200 type thing (24p HDV), they'll have another DVX-level success on their hands... (obviously, but we're rooting for them)

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

JVC is already planning to do a 24P HDV camera, a 2/3" shoulder-mount interchangeable-lens type of cam which would be in direct competition with the SDX900... about $20,000 MSRP has been bandied about.

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

...i am still dreaming of a HD 24p camcorder the size of the DVX... :-/

...i just can't go back to big shoulder cams...yek...

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

I agree about the size of the cam - keep it small. Panasonic should consider HD 24p with 2/3 CCDs - under $10,000. Am I dreaming?

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

I participated in a Panasonic VariCam workshop in Stockholm, Sweden the other day. The guy who held it was from Panasonic Europe and on the development(?) team of the VariCam. Over lunch i asked if Panasonic had any plans to release a Prosumer HD camera similar to JVCs or the Sony HDV, the answer was, Yes, in November of next year and it will be 24/25p. I also suggested they would develop a camera with a larger, 35mm equiv. CCD with remained resolution (to avoid data rate/manufacturing issues) in order to get a true 35mm DOF ;D

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

Here is a little bit of insider info:

2 JVC 720p HDV 3-chip cameras will be introduced this Fall. The more expensive one may not be available until December. They will have excellent image quality, nearly on the same level as the Varicam. varicam records 960x720 pixels and is compressed 6.5:1. The JVC's will record 1280x720 pixels with 17:1 compression but a lot more efficient codec.

Sony will introduce their prosumer HDV camera early next year.

Canon XL2 CCD block is HDV ready. The pixel shift technology allows HD resolution. The new 20x zoom will be good enough for the new HDV camera.

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

yes. JVC is holding a private party this week to introduce the new JVC models up here.

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

Somone needs to release an HD camera with a higher bitrate than DV! And 60p to 24p is lossier than 60i to 24p since you begin with 60 full frames and lose 36 of them instead of starting with 30 full frames and losing 4.

I'm hoping panny hasn't signed on the hdv bandwagon for a reason...25mbps isn't enough no matter how efficient the compressor.

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

Panasonic has a big card in their play with DVCProHD...

making a small and affordable DVCProHD camcorder and deck is very easy for Panny with the technology they have right now (since more than a year)...

let's wait and see if they'll drop the card...

[HockeyFan12] "Somone needs to release an HD camera with a higher bitrate than DV!"

Someone already has.

[HockeyFan12] "25mbps isn't enough no matter how efficient the compressor. "

25Mbps not enough? Enough for what? Theatrical release?HDTV? SD-DVD?, HD-DVD? VHS? Web? Why? Based on what observation/experience?

HDV footage might be sufficient for anything but theatrical release. I believe cable and satellite HDTV use between 14Mbps and 19Mbps compression. Is there any reason a high quality compressor can not be built into one of these HDV cams? One that will create footage on par with that seen on HDTV? I'm talking about a HDV 2/3" 3 chipper with a good lens.

Re: So what's todays HDV news?

In theory, 25Mbs might be enough, as you point out most of the HD distributed on cable systems is 19Mbs. However, keep in mind that many of those HD programs began life at 200MBs (2000Mbs) full bandwidth or at least 100Mbs compressed.

With the infrastructure of most current post facilities, 25Mbs doesn’t provide enough headroom, it would be like acquiring your show in VHS a couple of years ago; by the time it made it to the home it would have very poor image quality.

It will prove very useful for many of the independent producers who can easily modify their workflow to not step on the image as much and end up with a better product than they can now…
