So what segment is the EX1 in?

To me it seems unclear as to which segment the sony EX-1 belongs in.

Is it the segment ABOVE the HPX170?

The Ex-1 is roughly a grand more than the HPX170, but in order to shoot an 8 hour day. The costs of the Sony are less if used with SDHC media and adapters.

P2 cards make the HPX170 more expensive if you need to shoot an 8 hour event.

Why doesn't sony just lower the price of the EX-1 by a grand and get ALL of the sales between $4,000 and $8000?

Afterall who would REALLY buy anything else in that segment?

When you say get ALL, I'm assuming you meant get MORE. Not everyone prefers the EX1 over any other camcorder. Although I have to admit, whenever a cameraman comes to our store for a Demo on the EX1/3, most of them loves the camera and pushes their production company to get it.

Price EX1: 6,349.00.00
For under $5,300.00 you can get a Sony HVR-Z7U HDV Tape & Compact Flash camcorder.
Sony has a model already in that range which would be conflicted if the EX1 price comes near it.
