FS7: So what IS the OMB ENG solution..

Spielberg Shot all his close ups on a 21mm
Scorsese 25-32
Roman Polanski 25mm
Ordinary Welles

But keep in mind that they were shooting for a theater screen. Not for the tv screen, a laptop screen, or for a 5" screen held in the viewer's hand.

Rembrandt had different considerations when painting his 11 x 14' Nightwatch than did Vermeer when painting his 9″x 8″ Lacemaker. An extreme closeup on a theater screen is a different thing than an extreme closeup on a tv, laptop, or smartphone.

Besides, imagine if Picasso had limited himself by what artists before him had done. Had willfully restricted himself with "Michelangelo painted all his works using...". As though that was THE way to do things. And anything which broke from that was "wrong" or "bad".

Free your mind!

yeah, but the times when we turn a thread into a chat room are some of the best threads!

speaking of off topic-content, have you seen this lovely piece?:

So, in summary; the solution to the OMB ENG question is, an assistant.

Funny how production rarely book one! They're happy to occasionally send a soundie, who spends all day on FaceBook or even a couple of producers, who spend all day on LinkedIn. They might even send a runner, who spends all day on YouTube. But, they rarely send a bonafide professional, hard-working assistant. When they do, it's a joy...

actually it goes down like this:
you arrive at the location. You start looking at the space thinking about lighting, the Soundguy comes in takes one of your stands (they can't actually get their own) sets up the boom grabs a chair then gets on Facebook, while you are trying to light around the sitting soundman his boom and your stand the producer comes in "where do I sit?" pulls up the chair you set up for the interviewee starts looking at Linkedin.

Yes a good AC is what you want.

This is a very prescient point one I have failed to make but is constantly in my head.

The daily rental of a canon cn17 is about the same or more than an assistant. And frankly the assistant might add a lot more "production value".

It is a long discussion with prod and cons. The main pro of a cn17 is that I am happy to share a hotel with the lens
