FS7: So what IS the OMB ENG solution..

OMG - Morgan Moore goes for a Sony fly by wire lens - the heavens may open up and pour down tears!.

18, kinda meh. vs 16,

Mainly Sony may win by having something I can go test within an hour of my office.

To even try the Canon (8-64) lens is a mission as Id have to rent/buy various adapters then do a six hour roundie in the motor.

The big canon. yep, it is the thing.. but heavy.

On the electrics v manual.

There have been a couple of things in the last week.

My overhead rig if built higher could do with a remote operated FIZ

And also we were doing a test push in and holding focus was an extreme challenge that a computer could probably do better..

Yes I have a ronin focus but it lives on the ronin and also torques the mount on the FS7 - I dont fancy trading up to a full FIZ system

I'm surprised you're considering the Sony. It fails for me on close focus which is 0.95m along with all of the other Sonyisms it has.

18 vs 16 will be irrelevant if you can't get a metre away from your subject in a small office space for example.

At least with the Fuji there's a macro mode.

Well I had not really focussed (!) on close focus. My 28-85Booster falls down on this and the sony may fail too. I certainly can be fookin close to stuff (in a chinook!)

Like the EX1 there are two close focii mAF (sloppy ring and we dont like those) or full manual mAF being closer.

If I buy the sony I will go test it first.

AH yes, I forgot about the auto focus being a closer focus.

I talked about the 18-110 at length with Sam yesterday, after playing with one at the Photography Show on Monday.

I liked it - not a sexy purchase but, on reflection, that true parfocal ability (albeit electronically controlled) would probably save the odd wide shot I've found to be softer than I realised recently, while rushing to get shots.

If you're used to old school punch in, focus and pull out, you may well like it too.

I also tried the Zeiss 20-100 and, with that added E Mount stage, it's a longun and much heavier - although the heft arguably will dampen micro vibes, the bane of my (deliberately lightweight) shooting workflow.

I can see myself joining the 18-110 club soon.

Ben.

Have you tried CVP?

They always used to have a well stocked demo room which I was a frequent visitor too. They're definitely not the same company of old as their telephone people seem completely clueless nowadays, maybe they don't even have a demo room anymore?

Interesting morning.

top sticks, 200nikkor micro (boosted)
bottom handheld chat.. constantly bumping minimum focus on the boosted 28

Jesus, those are some seriously CLOSE talking heads. What's the motivation for such extreme close-ups Sam?

Yep I thought people might say that. Actually not so bad in a 16.9 crop here we have 235 crop which wont be the final output.

The first 200mm he is not talking it is a part of a three shot sequence of him working on the computer. I was trying for the screen reflected in his glasses.

The second.. 28mm well, yep, Im talking to him with the camera on my shoulder, and.. well I guess I like being that close.. it feels 'intimate'..

It was quite funny, due to NDA they basically would not answer any questions so I spun the 'story' to this project is so secret we cant tell you about it!

With my clients main audience being facebook/YT/phones/devices I guess also that tighter cropping is more appropriate as the viewing angle is small

Technically it might challenge the sony lens.

I'd never go wider than 35mm with an SBU or longer than 85mm on S35 for talking heads/voxpops to avoid the head distortion so well demonstrated in both those pics.
