So what is the best bang-for-your-buck Follow Focus?

The recent discussion on the Trustmt FF and failure of my FF this week has led me to beg the question.

I picked up a used Pro-Aim FF here in Marketplace earlier this year. It seemed to work ok at first, with some play, but totally failed me on a shoot this week. Absolute garbage, didn't even last a year, a waste of $ and now has to be replaced. So - what is the best bang-for-your-buck FF? What will be reliable, with almost no play, without breaking the bank (under $1k). Or am I just dreaming there is such a thing? I know FF discussions have been done in the past, but I sure would appreciate some input from people who have had their FF for some time and have really put them to the test.

thanks.

I dont have the answer for that "best bang for your buck" ... but I know that the one I would probably go for...(when I get round to replacing my Cavision unit)

It seems to be specced and built well and it reviews well.

But...it has one particulalr design / engineering advantage I really want.

That is, the abilty to mount it to the rails without having to pull off the mattebox or even the lens support bracket.

Hey Metrospace,

Like shooter has mentioned, our microFollowFocus Blue has gotten really good reviews, and been received really well by the community. Featuring adjustable hard stops, a quick release rod clamp, and the ability to adjust backlash, it fits all of your requirements for under $800. My favorite, and strangely least talked about, feature is the ability to adjust for backlash. Making it possible for the operator to change the distance between the two internal gears results in a unit that will never develop play.

Also, all of our gear features lifetime warranties, so we're in for the long run along side you.

What about the shoot35 follow focus? Around $500 and seems like a nicely built system. For about $700 you can get the baseplate and rails. Seriously thinking about getting it, anyone used it?

I have this unit. I can't comment in regards to the unit compared
to the Redrock unit, however I enjoy my Shoot35 FF.

It's got good adjust ability it's flip able for stubby lenses. Adjustments
to reduce play. Has a good build quality and feel coming from much
cheaper units in the past.

The only downside is taxes if you are in the states. It's coming from
oversea's and they like to make theirs (customs that is -- found out
the hard way have cash on hand for UPS/Fedex)

All the parts I have from Shoot35 I quite like. The mattebox is great
the only thing I want for that is a cloth bellows replacement/nuns nickers.

The rubber bellows puts to much resistance on my lenses at times making
the FF slip on the gear. I'm working on a fix now if anyone has idea's
I'm listening!

Can you give me some idea of what the import duties were that you had to pay? I'm thinking of getting their matte box, follow focus, rails bundle for 899 GBP = $1,450 +/-. Thanks much.

I purchased their follow focus and mattebox with a couple adapter rings and such
I had to pay $77 to UPS I believe the carrier was.

The 'fee' is to expedite it through customs and was a carrier fee.

I'm not positive how it's calculated but do have a check or
something handy if you order. They won't give you much
warning except for when they show up and ask for money.

I have to say I really like my Shoot35 equipment and their
support team is great. Again the only issue I have are the
bellows are a tad bit stiff. I'm working on 'breaking' them
in as it were until I can find some cloth nun's nickers
that fit.
