So long Adrenaline & Mojo Analog

My dilemma is that I have 2 Media Composers both currently at 5.03, one with Adrenaline, the other Mojo Analog. 98% of what I ingest is off of a P2 card, so an I/O box isn’t as important to me today as it was 5 years ago. Additionally, most of my output is either ftp’ed to a tv station or authored to bluray/SD DVD.

About once a month I get a Beta SP tape in for a commercial tag – or sometimes I have to rebuild a project that was originally shot on DVCPro (guess I could always go in firewire). Also, moving to Nitris is out of the question, it just costs too much.

Reading that 5.5 will be Avid’s last 32 bit software means that the days of Adrenaline & Mojo are drawing to a close. Looking down the road…this leaves me with two options: the AJA io express or Matrox MXO2 mini.
Pricing is different (Matrox at 495 or 895 with accelerator, AJA at 995) in the units but the Matrox also gives you component i/o. This could be useful for the Beta SP tags if I dump both of my current AVID I/O boxes. But the AJA seems to be a newer box- does it have more bells/whistles for that additional $500?.

Wondering if anyone else is going through same decision of which to buy or has experience with both cards. I would love your feedback before I buy two of the wrong cards.

Well, as things stand now, the MXO2 Mini is output only...no input. The IO Express does both, but is SDI input only, no Component. That is output only. BUT, Avid has said that they are taking baby steps....new devices added down the road are a big possibility.

Or...you can stop at 5.5 until the new devices come out. There is no reason that you HAVE to upgrade.

Agreed, but currently Im looking for a way to monitor HD output for clients. Everytime I buy something new I get hosed, later selling it for pennies on the dollar on ebay. Trying to make a prudent investment that lasts for a few years like my initial investment with Adrenaline....

I have just had to make this very decision after considering same parameters. Having a J3 SDI player in the system along with a DVCAM SDI 1500 machine means Avid 5.5 + AJA I/O Express is the way to go.

Just had a great conversation with Gary at www.videoguys.com and he suggested I actually purchase one of each due to my workflow. Each has their own unique benefits. One other thing he mentioned- at this point Matrox's analog inputs are not 'turned on' by avid. He indicated that you could access them through FCP or Premiere, but as of yet, Avid hasnt switched them on. Is this improvement coming? My guess is probably, but Avid is still selling hardware, this might take a while.
