FS7: So I shot with the FS7 II for the first time...

Hi,

A Canon C100 owner looking to buy a new camera this year. I had the chance to shot with a FS7 II for an entire week and I liked it a lot. But isn't just me or the LCD is totally useless? The brightness was cranked all the way up and I couldn't see very well. Thank god I had a Ninja flame.

So my question is this...
Ergonomics aside, would a FS5 with Inferno give about the same result as a FS7? Same dynamic range?

thanks!

I wouldn't say the LCD is useless. If outside, I'd say you'd need the eye piece cover on it (or some other cover) and inside it should be fine without. I would take the FS7 over the FS5 and external recorder.

Do a little searching through the forum -- there are already plenty of threads about the numerous features and options that the FS7 has that the FS5 does not.

Doug,

Chip and dynamic range are the same. Both output 12-bit RAW so you’ll get the same picture with an Inferno if you shoot it that way. Besides ergos, the difference comes down to internal recording...in that case, the FS5 is a broadcast-quality HD camera, the FS7(II) is a broadcast-quality UHD camera.

Both are great for run-n-gun and one-man band shooting. I got the FS5 for the auto-variable ND and small footprint. Now the FS7II has the variable ND too. The smaller footprint of the FS5 doesn’t make it invisible, though...especially with an external recorder.

The really good news...both have a pretty good codec for internal shooting.

After owning my fs7 for three years, and having shot a few times with the fs5... I can say that for a multi camera job I'd always choose the fs7. But for stuff where you're alone, moving fast, keeping a small footprint, the fs5's small form factor is awesome. I have my fs7 with a baseplate, the XDCA, a brick battery, and typically my smallhd 502 bright on it.... it's a bit heavy for sure. The fs5 was a treat to carry around for a few days. Ideally, we can have it all right? lol
