It's better if you're really talented and sign a sweet contract with the studio to net up to 40% of the profits brought in from the movie. This is after studio, distributors and everyone else who comes first takes their cut. But of course, if you're someone like Sam Raimi who made a bagillion dollars from both spider-man movies in their opening weekends, you'd be pretty frickin rich!
Its easy to find the salaries of huge directors, but I can offer little different perspective to get an idea of rates.
I work as a producer in TV advertising. We work with a lot of talented directors who you have probably never heard of (but if you watch any TV you have probably seen their stuff). These directors definitely know what they're doing and they often generate enough buzz to get Hollywood interested.
I've heard of recent offers to commercial directors of around $200k for about a year's work on a feature (the offer is officially 6 months, but its really a years worth of work)...and these are for big Hollywood films. These are often first time feature gigs for these directors.
Considering how many thousands of desperate directors out there who are trying to make any money whatsoever making films, that isn't a bad offer! However, many of these directors make more doing commercials, and there tends to be more stability in commercial directing once you're established. That said, getting established as a commercial director is extremely challenging and takes years of hard work.
