So, how is Premiere CS4?

AVCHD was my main reason for looking at CS4 but based on what I've read here and other places and the fact that I cannot justify a new laptop until 3Q of next year, I'm sticking with CS3 for now.

For me cs4 is much more sluggish than cs3, to the point of being unusable. I can edit my 720p or 1080p xdcam ex footage perfectly smooth and fine in cs3, however in cs4 I cannot even play it back without it juddering, lagging, or skipping. I'm running XP with 3 gigs of ram, a 2.4ghz dualcore amd, and an 8800gt. There's no excuse for that kind of performance.

And yes, I've tried automatic, draft, and highest quality settings.

Has anyone looked into this? I'd really like to be able to edit in CS4. Updating to the .1 now, hoping it helps.

The Update doesn´t solve the problem. I have the same situation .At first i thought this problem is a performance problem. But i checked it with 2 different machines (QC 2,8Ghz/4GB - System, 2x3GHz Xeon DC/4GB-System). Same situation on both machines. If you have found a solution in the meantime , please let me know it.

I downloaded the transcoder off the Panasonic website that converts AVCHD to MXF files very quickly, and I can edit with an MXF 1080 preset on CS4 very nicely. For me that's a work around until Adobe figures this AVCHD thing out. My problem now is trying to output to MPEG-2DVD. It hangs up half way through the Media encoder loading stage and then says it can't find the source material. Does anyone else have this problem?

I don't expect perfection but it would be nice if things will just work right the first time around. Such is the not the case with CS4. Looks and features don't mean much when you're frustrated trying to figure out what the Heck is wrong with the darn thing instead of enjoying a smooth editing session.

By the time the people at Adobe get things right, we would be enticed to buy a new version and the cycle would start all over again.

I don't want to sound negative but frustration does get on one's nerves sometimes.

the new adobe media encoder is great but they didn't have to get rid of the old renderer. Going through media encoder to output audio or still images is too cumbersome.
I've noticed a slight performance hit with hdv material but nothing major. My computer isn't even that fast, its a 2.4ghz intel quadcore. I'm thinking about jacking it back up over 3ghz again. I put it back to default when my system became unstable but it turned out to be a dying harddrive.
Overall, this version does seem to be alot more stable compared to cs3. I've had a lot less crashes and the media browser and omf export and other improvements makes it a clear winner.
