So, here's the thing ...

What is this brand biased issue I keep hearing? Can one not be stoked on what they have and support without being branded biased? Does it really matter?

Of course one can be to an extent, but clearly people in the debate are all, to various degrees, biased - myself included. Therefore if we are to reach some sort of expert consensus, we have to make sure that the experts with a "deciding" weight have a minimal real or perceived vested interest in deciding one way or another. It doesn't matter whether that bias is real or merely perceived, it still exists and muddies waters when the majority of us just want clarity! Otherwise we just end up in circular arguments.

The shootout will be useful, but if there is a third party just checking the testing methodology, then surely that will make the results more reliable for the rest of us who cannot be present to see the results firsthand?

I speak for myself; I am not biased at all. The DVX100 kills the other camera, for me and my needs. GIve me 24p or give me death. There is no other substitute for 24p.

I just have a hard time imagining "Yeah, PANASONIC RULES!!!!" I don't think I have a single other piece of Panasonic machinery in my house, anywhere. "Brand bias"? I don't think so. DVX love? Yes.

Well, i got very surprised this evening when i discovered that the mobile phone i´ve been using for two months was a Panasonic... Maybe it´s a mind trick and we have Pana everywhere but never really percieved it...

Well, for what it's worth, here at work we have both a DVX100 and a FX1. We use them to create training videos. We did one with both on 60 and looked at the results in SD after going through Premiere Pro with no corrections, etc. and we could not tell any notable differences between the two. They looked the same. Just our observations here.

I haven't a clue what the stuff I've just started to read means but it sure looks mighty applicable to this discussion. I'd suggest reading the Color Space Conundrum, American Cinematographer, April 2005 and look at the charts on page 90.
A very in depth look at Contrast Sensitivity Function, Resolution, Sharpness and MTF.
