Ok, there is a poll setup (see above) for this. Thanks for that. Please use that so the poll result is easily obtained.

So where are you with this whirlwind of a firmware hack for GH1?

1. I have patched mine so many times, I have lost count.
2. I just patched and am tinkering with it.
3. I would patch mine anytime soon.
4. I will, when the dust settles.
5. May be. Let's see what future brings.
6. I am scared of this stuff.
7. No, never. I can't be bothered.

I am at 4.

Sort of waiting for the MJPEG 23.976fps to work properly. Video out while recording would be a treat. Itching to patch without those though, and about to order some Class 10 SDHC cards.

.2 - a total of 4 times counting mistakes, omissions, forgotten checkboxes :-/ , etc....

Love the improvement to the in-camera hi-def audio quality... we could even live with the fact that we lose in-cam preview...

Can't wait to hook up the K184s :)

2 and 4.

I've simply done the "25pN" thing and until I've had time to analyse how that initial change works with the various NLE's I have here I'm not going to change something else as well. I was hoping that I'd be able to get Premiere Elements 8 to work with the non-wrapped files, but no, severe macroblocking remains on playback in that program. But not in others. In some other programs I've had freezes at transitions and I need to see whether the non-wrapped files make any difference with that problem.

Just patched it last night. It's all starting to make sense...

It's the weirdest thing too, doesn't feel like anything has changed with the camera...but suddenly the video is sharper, hahaha!

4. as a newbe to video, my main interest was the 30 minute european blockage, soon i discovered that even in live music concerts which is my main area of interest, i never shoot continous for 30 minutes.
I still have version 1.1 he he he waiting for the final hack, still learning what mud is and i can see shutter speed in my DVX100 but i dont see it in my GH1, that's how ignorant i'am in photo/video world.

I chose 7. While it is not a 'can't be bothered' situation, it is almost a 'no, never'.

I feel in some way about this sort of thing, like I do about the Infrared mods which involve taking off the IR filter from the sensor array... while there may be some specific benefit, the 'damage' is done.

In the case of the firmware, I presume it is possible to go back to the manufacturer's version, but at the moment the 'features/advantages' don't present to me such a compelling benefits that I'd want to risk bricking my camera.

Further, while some people have listed 'rave' results, if I really were to contemplate using the hacks, I'd like some form of test set up that really would determine what the resulting 'bit' rate is, and what the resulting 'artifacts' are, if any.

If every 100th frame is 'dropped', well, that's not my idea of a 'fix'... and how does one know that there isn't such a loss??? (here I do base a certain amount of faith in the original engineering and testing such that the device doesn't exhibit such a failure in the standard firmware... but if someone tested the manufacturer's firmware, and found significant 'errors' like this, perhaps I'd agree that an improvement has been made.)

For another example, there was a thread in regard to 'color space'... some people reported being able to set sRGB vs. Adobe RGB, and could see differences between the two in 'video' mode... well according to the manual, video mode 'always' uses sRGB... so what were people 'seeing' as different...

Another example is the audio AGC vs. limiting the signal... again some people 'swore' X was the case, then on investigation, the basis seemed a little less than sure, that the audio on the device has AGC at all...

So, for these sorts of reasons, I've not been inclined to use the hack on my camera... it is the only one I have... I don't have money for a second, etc...

j1clark,

I hear your concerns and I had reservations myself. But I took the plunge because the "stock" GH1 just wasn't giving me the results I needed from the camera. But to be careful, and to see if there really was a difference, I shot a series of tests with the camera "stock" and then patched just the AVCHD portion (which is all that I shoot) and shot the same tests again.

I was very impressed with the results, particularly with "mud" during panning, and with FPN during panning. In static shots, there was not that much improvement. I then did a second patch and boosted the AVCHD portion higher, and again saw better results when it came to camera movement with complex scenes (like foliage).

The nice thing about the patches is that you can revert back to the factory firmware whenever you want. The only difference is the version number will no longer be 1.32.

But we each need to do what we think is best with our own camera. Just wanted to present the other side of the coin.

Best,
-Tim

I'd hate to think that somewhere there is a group of panasonic engineers reading these "advancements" and entertaining themselves knowing where these settings will lead. "They'll be in for a surprise" type of thing. I'd like to believe that Panasonic has tried all these settings and for good reason/stability, etc. decided on the default ones they shipped with. Maybe after people have tested these hacks for a few more months will I try it. (secretly hoping Panasonic implements something official)
