There is a new RC podcast and Jason Wingroves explains moving from the F5 to the FS7. See if you understand, I am not sure I do but I have an idea why he did it.
Sounded like he did it mainly for full frame lenses via metabones. I didn't quite get the stuff about the oval irises and depth of field on the Contax lenses though.
If you are using PL, EFand Leica R mount glass depending on the job and want to be be a lightweight 1 or 2-man band then it is a great choice, especially over an F5.
Jason has a set of EF mount COntax Zeiss glass modded by Richard at DSO to have oval '2x anamorphic' aperture shapes for quasi-anamorphic looking shoots that still use the lovely zeiss glass and coatings.
I have the Dogschidt Optiks FF58 with 2 x anamorphic aperture and an FF38 38mm optical attachment. My FF58 is fairly neutral (you can have tints and coating scratches etc to 'funk up' the image)
Still waiting to use them in anger but for stuff like music promos and even narrative stuff they'll be great.
Ben,
This thread got me interested in some of these "shitty" lenses with the cool bokeh's. I noticed the Helios 44-2 58mm's are very cheap and even the FF58 is pretty reasonable.
Do you know if there is a good source for info about buying these?
Anything I should know before picking up a Helios?
Any other cool lenses to check out?
By the way how many of those adapters are available for the FF58 at this poi nt . Pn the website it only says that the FF38 is coming.
the EF mounts that come on the FF58s are rock solid. I've not used his PL mount lenses but I imagine they are just as solid.
there is a PDF on the site with all the options and if you search vimeo you'll find lots of examples. I might pick up a second FF58 with all the most extreme options for when I want some crazy - I used to have one but sold it to someone in the US who wanted to jump the queue.
The oval bokeh ones are a fixed aperture (f2.8 or f3.5 for 1.5x and 2x ovals respectively) but you can just forgo that side of it and get a crazy screwed up sexy lens and still have iris control.
If you just want to pick up a bog standard helios of ebay there's 2 main types - the 44m2 and the 44m4. They're both great but the 44m2 is known to have slightly more 'swirly' bokeh wide open. Because people like me have been telling everyone about the for years they've gone up in price but you can usually find them on ebay for anywhere between £15-40 in good condition, and then you'll need a £2 M42 to EF adapter.
I picked up the helios 44-2 on ebay. read some reviews that preferred the 44-2 to the 44M-2 even though they said the M had better coating and contrast.
80mm would be nice because I use that more often for interviews , but its pricier.
Well 'better contrast' is in the eye of the beholder
the M4 is probably sharper and more 'modern' looking which is the opposite of what I look for in these lenses
If you fancy a lovely matching set check out the Mir 1/b 37mm f2.8 (usually about £35) and the beautiful Jupiter 9 85mm f2 (around £90). All made in the same factory and with similar characteristics.
