GH4 So, 4k to card then to 1080p or 1080p 4:2:2 with recorder? Help!

So I can't afford a 2k$ dollar 4k 4:2:2 recorder, but I am looking at some of the sub 900$ dollar options from ATMOS that give the 4:2:2 1080p. But I've heard wonders about taking 4k to 1080p in the timeline, soooo can someone with experience shed light on this?

If you try to record 25p with Atomos you´re out of luck - it doesn´t work in 4:2:2 (at least for now, but Atomos hasn´t even annouced anything for the Ninjas concerning 25p).

30p is a problem too. The HDMI output seems to be 50 and 60p - which many monitors and recorders cant handle. Atomos cant.

If your computer can handle the 4k files, that is currently the best solution for beautiful 1080p. If you shoot 4k, the downrezzed 1080p has no moire or aliasing (or very, very little), the color tonality is amazing, and you can crop your footage up to 200 percent without any perceivable degradation of the image. Here is my most recent example of GH4 shot at 4k and downrezzed to 1080p:

As regards the atomos recorders, if you set your camera to record avchd, you will get a 50i/60i over hdmi, which you can set to be 10bit 422. As long as it's interlaced, atomos recorders can do pulldown to give you 25/30p. All other modes give you 50/60p. It's still direct off the sensor, so the choice of a lower rez codec won't be an issue.

In my opinion, this is a Panasonic issue, not an Atomos one.

@dvbrother - what NLE do you use? My Avid destroys any 4k stuff I've shot with horrible aliasing on down-convert.
