Snorting Cocaine

Okay, so I'm making a film and there is going to be fake snort-age of cocaine... Anyone have any ideas as to how I can pull this off without harming my actors or having them snort up a pile of flower? Does anyone know if there is any damage if you snort a pile of flower? Hehehe sounds redic... But, it's something I haven't experimented with yet. How do they do it in the feature films?

Okay, anyway, feedback is great appreciated.
 
Used to be, you could get some white powder snuff-like stuff at head shops. Came in different "flavors" like mint and strawberry and such. Came in little round metal canisters.

Haven't been to a head shop in a quarter century, so don't know if this still holds true.

And flour would probably, at a miminum, congeal in their nasal passages. Powdered sugar would at least dissolve...eventually. I think.

Fake Cocaine

Option #1 by Sean McArdle

One solution is to use powered sugar, and have the actors blow (ie exhale), rather than inhale. From the audience, the effect is the same. The powder disperses so fast that the audience doesn't even realize the difference. Try it with different amounts of sugar, and experiment with blowing it in different directions (ie specifically away from the actor, off the edge of the table, or something like that).

Option #2 by Sheldon Johnson (BIGCANADIAN)

I spoke to a pharmacist today who recommended we go with powdered sugar (provided the actor is not a diabetic). She also recommended we purchase a sodium chloride nasal inhaler (NOT a decongestant), and that the actor take a couple of hits of that after each show. It should help clean the sinuses, and prevent the growth of bacteria.

We used baking powder...as it clumps up better and doesn't fly away. We had it on a mirror and they 'chopped' it with a credit card...it looked and sounded authentic...not gritty like sugar' The actors simply 'acted' the snort and it looked great. Our house holds 250...so it too is very 'cozy' no one knew the difference.

Movies also use powdered milk, soy baby formula, or Ovaltine for fake cocaine (like the Basketball Diaries). It won't hurt your system in anyway, and if you actually do snort it, it won't hurt your nose too much (if at all).
 
do tight shots like from requiem for a dream and suck whatever powder through the straw into your mouth. At least then you won't have F-ed up nasal cavities.

Btw JH, the "go with powdered sugar (provided the actor is not a diabetic)." made me laugh. Am I sick and twisted for finding that funny?

I was laughing at that as well... So nah, you’re not sick and twisted. Maybe a dark sense of humor though?
 
You could also use whatever powder you like and have your make-up person tape a long flexible tube (available in tropical fish stores by the foot) up the off-camera side of your talent to a the snorting device (rolled-up dollar, straw) with the far side of the tube going to a vacuum. An elbow tapped into the side of the dollar would allow you to put the business end of the device right up their nose so it looks real.

This is a little more work, but you can repeat the shot again and again for performance and framing with no risk to your talent.

Well... I would do that if I wanted to kill my actor... Because, he is going to die shortly after snuffing. However, I sort of have legal issues, not only in killing someone, but in possesion of a crazy-ass drug. But, every suggestion is a good suggestion... However, not the most sound. Thanks anyway. Hehehe
 
Lol. Three weeks. Ehh, I have 2 weeks to get this project done... I don't think I'll use the real stuff now that I think of it...

And, of course, I'm joking too.
 
Yo, so I was talking to my friend who is a graduated film student at CCS... Anyway, he told me some good ideas for faking drug stuff... Here they are...

Cocaine - Use powdered milk as cocaine. You can snort it and it'll only make a goo in your nose that you can blow right back out. Plus, it looks like the same texture as the real stuff. They did this in the feature film "0Rules of Attraction."

Heroine - Use baking soda (baking powder) with water. You can boil it in the spoon and it'll look like the real thing. It doesn't get syrupy like sugar water or funky goop like anything else. Plus it clups just like the real stuff.
 
LOL, don't think you can do yourself much harm sniffing flour up ya snorter, but you'll probably be blowing 'dough' for days afterwards.

Jeez guys...you dont have to snort anything. Here's how the pro's do it. You take a straw...fill it with the powder...whatever kind of powder you want....set it on the table with some powder already sprinkled on the table a little bit...then you film the actor laying the powder out on the table in a line with the straw up to his nose and then you reverse it in post. Bada bing bada boom...it looks like he's snorting the stuff.

Real heroine is brown. I never thought living by drug addicts in my early childhood would benefit me in any way. I've been wrong this whole time.

Anyways, I think I should leave a good (true) heroine related story. Some guy around where I (currently) live used to be a heroine addict. He cooked up while driving (almost late to work). Then he shot up while it was still boiling. Fun times, those must have been.

i have a funny story about that one... once a friend of mine who is diabetic snorted sugar for amovie i made and it didn't hurt her. so i think sugars good. (just don't do too much)
 
somebody said powdered sugar. thats the way. i did a short where i played a clown who lost everything because of booze and coke i snorted powdered sugar it was smooth, and all you do is run water in your nose after and swallow. it also cuts well on the mirror or whatever you're using.it looks real, not the good grade mind you but it works and it keeps the actor up.
 
heroin; china white is white but the grade on the streets used to be brown;brown sugar how come you taste so good (rolling stones)
