F35: Snake Bite!

@macgregor thanks for sharing these grabs. I really like your composition choices and how you paint with light. Your work is inspiring. I'd love to get hold of a set of CineAlta Primes someday too. Great look. I also dig the way you used smoke through the trees to add texture and atmos. I got to use a hazer for a recent shoot and it really adds depth to the images.

Cheers, Paul

I don't want to put words into MacGregor's mouth but the F35 is a native tungsten sensor - so it would make sense to shoot tungsten with filtration in front of the lens or correct later in the color to make the footage have less noise- I need to try to this more - I want to test this out and see where it lands.

Sorry I've been away for a few days.
So this is the thing: the f35 on daylight WB setting renders a really warm image, I think we all know that. So while being in the forest where we shot this film I could see that all the green and shade was casting a very warm tone already. I also know from experience that for some reason it seems more easy to add warmth than removing warmth to F35 footage. And on top of that the f35 is native tungsten. And also on top of that the f35 has an amaaaazing wide gamut capable of capturing a lof ot color (probably one of the widest color gamut sensor ever produced - hype here). So once I was on set i though, screw it, lets shoot this on tungsten. And it was the right choice!
The graded stills that I posted have my Slog lut plus a touch of warmth. As simple as that, and I think color wise it's the best footage I've ever shoot, I couldn't be happier. Skin tones look good, and the footage looks very filmic without (as I said) barely any grading to it!
I want to keep testing this wokflow to see how it behaves on the open. I read thise links from Roger Deakens (i was not aware that sometimes he shoots tungsten film with no filter correction and he "fixes" it in post. Very informative.

I shoot outdoors in daylight at 3200k and 4500k quite frequently, white balance gives you a great deal of control over the colour in your image. Grabs look terrific Mac, is this a short film?

Did you guys know that The Tree of Life was shot on tungsten film? I think we can all agree is ranks in the top 5 best looking films in the last decade or two.

Great stills!

Mac, thanks for the info, you always are innovating F35 workflow and constantly raising the bar on what this camera can do.

Are you using the new firmware on the 7Q which has the SLOG 1 MLUT? Would you use MLUT on 7Q for monitoring or would you use the LUT in the viewfinder? Do you notice a difference? I feel like my F35 MLUT is slightly different than the MLUT in the 7Q, 7Q is more saturated but looses less in the highlights, when I turn on my F35 MLUT, i can see highlight information dissapear.

Now we need a Daylight in Tungsten MLUT.

Interesting, I need to try that update.

Straight up Gorgeous!! It looks so warm and inviting. When you say Sony primes, are you talking about the same primes that came with the F3 bundle?
