Smooth auto-iris?

Okay, here's another question I'm hoping you guys can clear up. When I was playing with the AF-100 at B&H, they had the 14-54mm Zuiko on it, which is the lens I bought to use on mine when it arrives. When changing the aperture with the wheel on the AF-100, it steps down and up very noticeably. When I put it to auto-iris, it was still stepped as it changed. If I take that same lens at home and put it on my GF-1 in movie mode and Aperture Priority, it stops down and opens up with no stepping. I can pan from a dark area to a light area and the iris opens up smooth as butter. Is there some way to get this same behavior in the AF-100?

Or a related question, which doesn't contain the phrase "auto-iris"- why is the iris wheel stepped? As proved by putting a M43 lens on a still camera in motion mode and aperture priority, the lenses are capable of moving smoothly between apertures without detents at each 1/3 stop. So why can't the iris wheel drive them that way? Or am I missing something?
