SmallHD Monitor arrived!

I received my SmallHD DP1 monitor today, and decided to setup my HMC150 rig in it's (almost) full glory. (The SmallHD monitor is fantastic. Built like a talk, yet lightweight. Color accurate, and works perfectly!) I had a full blown geek-out at how well all this gear works together, and took the nerd-fest to the next level by taking a few photos of it.

I've been shooting with the DVX100 and Sony Z1U's for a few years, and I've only had the HMC or a few months. I love it already. This rig is basically setup for corporate/press coverage events for 2 specific clients.

Now I just need to get a RedRock 35mm adaptor, and I'm all set. (For now.....)

Sweet. Is that rig portable? It looks like you have handles there. I can't imagine using any camera controls while holding it - it looks like a two-handed ordeal.

It's a DVTec MultiRig - the whole thing is infinately configurable, and it's supported by a shock-absorbing support rod, mated to a belt worn by the operator. I've been using it with my Z1U for a while. You can shoot with one hand (since the rod supports all the weight), and manipulate all controls quite easily.

i have the red rock prime lens adapter i will be selling after aug 10 th. with a set of nikon lens. newest cinescreen. how much was the small hd / res? /battery?

Looks freakin' FANTASTIC, sir! I think when payday comes, I'll have to order myself one....

Quick question though: does the monitor have any sort of image flip function for 35mm adapter or would you just have to mount it upside down?

Either way, it looks like a sweet rig, man. As Naploean Dynamite said, "LUCKY!"

Looks super, where do you set the date and time you want to travel to?
LOL......love it.

Native res on the SmallHD screen is 1280x768. No built-in flip function - but it's got mounting points on all sides, so you can just flip the monitor very easily. Monitor was $800 + $50 for the battery = check out www.smallhd.com for the details. It arrived on my doorstep 2 days after I ordered it online - great start-up company with phenomenal customer service. http://www.smallhd.com/dp1/

Booggerg: It's actually quite comfortable. The MultiRig allows you about 4 inches of play, so I can scoot the camera back. Regardless, with the support rod, you don't even notice the weight at all. (I thought the same thing, then I weighted the rig with a much heavier camera/lens, and it felt fine)

Yeah, I went ahead, bit the bullet and ordered one today. :)

Having just bought the HMC150, a spare battery for it, a 8 GB memory card from Best Buy at a rip-off price, and now this SmallHD monitor & accessories, I'm a little weak at the knees (both physically and financially) but creatively excited, nonetheless.

Thanks for helping me make the decision.

Well, mine arrived yesterday and it's incredible! Very lightweight yet has a very solid construction. SmallHD is a real winner.

I am still waiting for my 1/4-20 shoe mount from B&H to arrive (hopefully it'll be here this afternoon) but so far, it's great. I cannot wait to start using in the field.

What light is that? Do you like it? Looks like its small and dimmable...

It's a VidLED - here's the website: http://vidled.com/

Yes, it's dimmable. They're handmade, inexpensive, and last longer than any LED light I've ever used, including the LitePanels stuff. And they're relatively inexpensive and INSANELY durable. I would never use another LED light - I love this these things. You can buy 'em in different color temps, gel 'em, etc. It's probably one of my favorite pieces of gear. Everytime I do a shoot, another camer-op or AC asks me about it, and end up buying one or two.

Which one do you find most useful - Warm, Day or Cool

Standard Series requires power, think I can use a sony L series battery?

I use the "DayLED" the most often. In fact, I'd say about 90% of the time. It just has the best balance of light output:color temperature. On an average run n' gun shoot, I'll set the white balance on my camera(s) to 5.6K, auto iris, 1/48 shutter, and dial the VidLed to about 75% output.

I use the VidLed battery pack, which is rechargeable. At full brightness, it lasts about 4-5 hours, which is super. Not to mention, no flicker, or diminished light output as the battery drains. But they sell a bunch of different battery connectors, so you can use DVX/HVX batteries, Power Taps, etc.

I've dropped these lights in water, onto concrete, and generally treated them like ****. But they always work, and work perfectly.

Comprehensive SmallHD Review

Comprehensive SmallHD Review

Hi All,

Have you guys seen this SmallHD Review it seems super comprehensive (at least to a newbie).

http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3742

It sorta made me think about this twice about this monitor. Is there anything like this on the Manhattan 8.9" HD Pro Monitor HD089B (NTSC & PAL)? Any recommendations for a great, reasonable cost field/focus assist monitor? Just got my AG-HMC 150 and loving it.
Thank You,
Dean

Everyone looks at a tool in a unique way according to their needs. Glossy screen, blocky blacks, apparent noise and unconventional buttons, yeah, ok...I guess.

But baby, this monitor is sharp ! It is heaven sent for those of us with aging eyes. Now I can quickly and confidently focus. Tack sharp...no doubts.

That alone is worth the price of admission for me.

I would love to know more about why or if I should not get a Manhattan monitor over this. The glossy screen would surely render it hard to see in bright New Zealand sunlight?

That can't be comfortable to shoot with... even with the flexpod, it would be awfully front-heavy

the flexpod neutralizes all the weight with ease. even though it rests on your shoulder, there is no fatigue there either. i use a MultiRig with an EX1, HMC150 & 5DmkII. i have at times thought about a rail system (for follow focus) but i dont think i could live without the flexpod. i have considered retrofitting it to a rail system as well sometime in the future.

you can hold this rig all day long with no effort. no stress on your arms or hands. your hands and arms do nothing more than direct the camera to shoot. flexpod does the real work.
