Don't think of it as a loupe that detaches from a screen. Think of it like a screen that detaches from a loupe. The loupe stays stationary while the screen flips out just like a handycam. When the screen is folded in, it faces in toward the camera body.

While a nice idea, this concerns me for three reasons:

1. The cables and power mount directly to the backside of the screen. When the screen is closed, they would stick out sideways in front of your face. I like the ability to see out of my left eye when I'm using an eyecup. I'm sure right-angle cables would help this.

2. Because the cables are mounted to the screen portion, that means opening and closing the screen will need flexible cables to prevent stress on the ports.

3. The windows on the loupe section are a nice idea when you have unused portions of the screen. Unfortunately this makes little sense as they would be facing the to the right when the screen is closed.

Ditto, I'm worried about the cables & battery, which could easily block your view of your left eye. This is what I'm interested in hearing about from people going to NAB next week.

I sometimes miss the old Betacam days where I got good at having my right eye in the EVF & my left eye on the world around me.

The SmallHD DP4 EVF was too wide & blocked a lot of the view of my left eye. The Zacuto EVF was a little better, I'm guessing the new Gratical is very similar to the EVFs on the old Betacams.

Got that right...

Love the flip out LCD on Amira's EVF but wonder how well it that function will translate on this product due to the size of the screen & it's cabling.

It is difficult to determine from the early pictures, but it looks like it can be rigged with the batteries and connections facing the camera body too. There are mounting points on top and bottom of the monitor and I'm sure there will be an image flip function. Then you could just swing the VF out for a side view of the monitor screen.

Right on. You could dial the zoom in so the focal length matched your off eye and shoot both eyes open at the same perspective. Great technique for fast moving news coverage.

The more I think about this, the more I like it. My problem with loupes has always been, what do you do when you're shooting high or low and not at eye-level. I've had loupes that flip-up, but that never seems to work well. This is more elegant I think and it keeps a nice thin profile when you're shooting with the loupe. Cables could be an issue. But I think with right angle connectors and cables pinned to the pivot point, I think either open or closed should be about the same length.

this is pretty much what i want to see built into cameras by default. What's with 3.5" low res displays on $8K cameras in 2015? This should be the de-facto standard.
