SmallHD - HDSDI worth it?

I have yet to hear anyone regret a SmallHD purchase. They are a stellar company who treat their customers like gold, and the Dp6 is basically the best value you can get.

If you read my other posts you will realize that I am an equipment snob - for example I refuse to shoot on 5D - Red, Alexa, F35, etc. ONLY, or I say no to the job. Our SmallHD meets our super-fussy standards. It would meet anyone's standards in all ways.

Haha, isn't that the truth. We've sparred enough on the DSLR front over on reduser (Rick Burnett) :)

SmallHD told me their supplier stopped making the 9" panel. It is too bad, because they had been telling me for most of last year that they were working on an HD-SDI version. Now, there is nothing in the works, at least as of two months ago.

I see a lot of posts saying the DP1x UI is way worse than the DP6. In what ways? I am looking at getting a used DP1x, because of the larger size for jib use. I've been holding out for a HD-SDI one, but I have yet to find one with a resolution in a reasonable price range.

So I'm about to "proceed to checkout" on my SmallHD monitor in preparation for the AF, my Marshall only has component for my HVX with no upgrade path on that. So is the HDSDI on the Small HD worth the extra $400 bucks? Will it make much of a difference in monitoring? I'm not concerned about the "but SDI has a locking connector" bit. I can deal with that if it means saving some cash. Resolution and color/quality should be identical no? Even with external recorders, they have HDMI outs as well.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I have the SmallHD 6" monitor with HDSDI and it's definetly worth it. Not primarily for SDI monitoring but for running long lines down jibs and what not and it also has a bypass (SDI in and out) so you can go through the monitor and out to a Nanoflash on the same line. The thing is built like a tank as well.

I was almost settled on going the SmallHD route untill I found this thread.
(after reading countless of threads about Marshall vs. SmallHD)
The only negative I've read about the SmallHD is that the colors aren't the best/most accurate.
This should be better/fixed by a firmware update, but I'm not sure if it's as good as the Marshall.

If anyone has compared color reproduction on both SmallHD and TVLogic (even though the use the same panel), it would be great to hear what you have to say.

Thanks!

Best,
- Morgan
