smallHD DP1 and HPX-170

Hi, I got one of the pre-order DP-1's. Overall it's a fantastic monitor, if you have an HPX and use a lens adapter, this makes focusing a breeze, no more hoping that shot was in focus. However, one other HPX-170/DP-1 owner and myself have issues with the picture strobing and stuttering during refresh.
SmallHd is looking into it now, the problem is that only 2 of us have reported an issue. So are there any other DP-1 owners that use an HPX-170 that are having issues with it strobing when panning or titling or moving the camera around? If so, please speak up both here and to smallHD.

thanks!

I find that the stuttering during pans/tilts is less when you set the HPX-170 output display to '1080i' instead of 'Auto'. When the HPX-170 outputs in 720p to the DP1, there is a slight lag and stutter for sure... Also, if you're shooting 24fps, there naturally will be strobing and stuttering if you pan or tilt too fast regardless of what monitor you're using.

Definitely think it's related to refresh rates...

yeah, even at 1080i it's still useless for jib or glide cam stuff...do you have an HPX-170 also? are you the other person who reported it to smalHD? if you haven't reported it, you should (please), this needs to get fixed and they need to be able to have as much background info as possible...

Yes, I have a 170. I'll go ahead and give the folks a heads-up as well...

SmallHD Strobing

SmallHD Strobing

I am very interested in purchasing the Marshall V-LCD70P-3GSDI or SmallHD monitor, but very concerned about the strobing problem with the SmallHD. I wrote to SmallHD and got this reply:

"We are aware of the strobing issue and are actively working on a solution. We are correcting the issue with a firmware change and have made significant progress over the past few days. We are 100% confident that it will be solved this week and all DP1s sold on or after July 1 will have the firmware that corrects the issue.

We also plan to provide a no-charge firmware update to the early adopters."

Would a firmware update really change something like this? I thought it had to do with poor response time. Anybody have any thoughts?

Well, I have to say the customer service seems very good at SmallHD. They assured me that it has nothing to do with response time and that the problem has been solved on the new units.

The people at smallHD are being very quick and open about fixing this. It's in their best interest to get it fixed and sending out more problematic monitors doesn't make much sense business wise...they would just have to spend more money and time fixing those....

I still think I made the right choice in buying this monitor...

That's good. I also own the HPX170 . . . its tempting to go with the Marshall because it uses SDI and seems like a pro monitor. But then the SmallHD is HD . . . It's just hard to compare two monitors I haven't used . . .

Is this only a problem with the 170? I'm unclear as to why it wouldn't effect all other sources that are using the same input????

The issue with the stuttering has been fixed. If you were thinking of this monitor, but were waiting for that to be taken care of...it has...
