Small Movies....Big Dreams!

Re: Small Movies....Big Dreams!

..small off the record suggestion here:

buy some cheap airsoft guns. the replica .45s in the films are pretty obviously spring powered bb guns. its a severe thorn in the side of the "to be taken seriously" side of the films. ive done it too. ..oh well.

Re: Small Movies....Big Dreams!

Zig_Zigman.. I would say that a good chunk of he people on this board don't use professional actors... most like me.. run off of nothing budgets.. You don't need professional actors to make a good short!

I liked it.. but I definately think the Garageband/Soundtack music doesn't fit well at all... especially when it is played over and over again for different scenes.

my two cents.

Re: Small Movies....Big Dreams!

The animated intro is great -- how did you animate that?

The overall look is good and the music is okay, but the characters aren't developed at all. The twist at the end didn't hold any significance for me.

I agree that you don't need pros, but actors (non-union) really help elevate shorts.

Re: Small Movies....Big Dreams!

I would also suggest that you don't have your actors wear the shirt of your comany (missing link cinema) either. it just screams amateur.

Re: Small Movies....Big Dreams!

I always say good job for any one putting work togather, we all know how much goes into a project!

I understand the idea behind the BW but dont feel the shots or acting lends to the look enough. I would explore some shots to make it more intense seemed sorta safe to me. The end could use some tweaking, the twist did not grab me.

Godd Luck!

Re: Small Movies....Big Dreams!

Welcome to the board!
Well, first off, I agree with Boomerang in that it's great that you're simply doing the work. The more you do the better you'll get. Putting it into the context of a 72 hour film festival makes the movie better than it is (because it's hard to just come up with something, shoot it and edit it on such a schedule), but in all honesty, it still doesn't work for me on any level.

I don't agree with the idea that it's ever ok to just have anyone play the parts (unless your intent is just to get some experience in production and post production, but then I wouldn't show that footage off as a film). You always need someone who can act on some level and these actors just sounded like a bunch of people reading lines which takes the viewer out of the narrative. But it's pretty clear that since this was a 72 hour film festival, the casting was probably based on who was available to play the parts.

The story, in all honesty, didn't make any sense (but again, time being the factor, etc.) My sense is this is just another notch in your belt of experience and you should look at it that way. The logo was pretty neat. But you might want to edit it down a bit as it runs a little long.

All in all, it's an effort and an experience and one you probably learned something from which is great. Keep going and don't let anything anyone tells you stop you.

Re: Small Movies....Big Dreams!

Hey MLCinema,
What effect did you use to get the bible to be red while everything else was black and white. It looked great!

Re: Small Movies....Big Dreams!

Justin,

I used Final Cut Pro 4 HD....I got lucky there was no red in anything else around the book! So I used the color correction filter in FCP and tweaked it a lot. Color correct, export, color correct, export etc....

I am sure there is a better easy way to do this effect????!!!!
